Food Allergy

New here and overwhelmed!

My daughter is almost 5 months old, I EBF and she has some allergies. The worst is nuts but she also  has dairy and soy, I think she has more  but havent done any additional tests. We finally got her stool tested which was a nightmare to collect because of her runny poop ugh, but the GI doctor said it showed that she had a hard time digesting carbs???? Anyone else been told this? Or have any additional info??? TIA

I know a lot of people were having trouble and had to change their accounts. But if TB's issues is not your case you should be able to go to thebump.com home page. Towards  the bottom is a button that says "Update your Profile". Click on that and it will take you to a page that shows your picture and screen name. At the top it says "Edit my avatar & sig". Click on that. Scroll down and in that mix of computer gibberish is the code that is your siggy. Replace it with a new code that you have gotten from wherever. The Bump's codes are here: https://global.thebump.com/tickers/BirthdayTickerChooseBackground.aspx

I'm overwhelmed too. I'm in a similar situation to you it sounds like. Unfortunately our GI will not test for anything so I really don't know what she's all allergic to. Other than runny poop, what are your lo's symptoms? Not that I can help, I'm really just curious.

Embarrassed Ain't that just great... now I'm curious about other people's babies poop.

  • Well she didn't run specific allergy tests but with elimination of items and her symptoms we discoverd those three. With the nuts she had bad eczema, a rash all over her body, and squirts of runny poop when she coughed, sneezed, or cried. On top of all that she would scream all stinking day, needless to say before we figured it all out I didn't leave the house for almost six weeks! From my research it seems like the digestion of carbs can correlate with milk/soy allergies and the breaking down of lactose but I stil have a lot to learn!
  • I'm not sure what the GI doc means when he says carbs-that kind of encompasses a lot!  After doing a strict elimination diet and food challenges, we discovered that DD is intolerant to wheat (in addition to dairy and egg).  I would try cutting out wheat.  I can eat rice, potatos, fruit, corn, etc.  Although, corn is a somewhat common allergen too, so you may want to cut that out too, just to make sure.  Good luck!

I am a little confused as well, with some research I believe it sounds like she cannot breakdown the sugars of the carbohydrates which can go along with a dairy allergy but I still am not certain. The GI doctor said once we follow up and if she has issues  gaining weight or the runny poop gets worse than I might have to supplement with hydrolyze to help break things down better  I have eliminated many things from my diet such as dairy/soy/nuts/eggs/wheat, which she felt the best and didn't have most of the symptoms I see the GI doctor again on Tuesday but I am also wondering if we should also be seeing an allergest too.

  • I would definately go see an allergist.  If you can find a pediatric one in your area that's even better.  We spent months working with a dermatologist and I did a ton of different elimination diets and my son's eczema never got better until we had an actual dx from an allergist.  I had all the wrong food combos on the elimination diet and the meds he was on weren't helping because we were continuing to feed him (unknowingly) bad food.  Our lives were so much easier once we knew where/how to focus.

  • could it be celiac disease? don't quote me on it b/c i'm not too familiar with it but i think it means when you can't digest carbs.

Either way, i would just get blood work done on your child. Some doctors may want to wait until your child is either 6 months or 12 months old.  I would be ok with waiting until she's 6 months, but not 12. You can also go find an allergist on your own.  It's so good to know exactly what your child is allergic to.

From what I have been reading it seems like it's a strand of sugar in the carbohydrate that she cannot digest and from what I understand it is the lactose strand. I still am very lost in everything but we go again on Tuesday so I have started my lists of questions!! Thank you all for such help and it is nice they have a board here, I was starting to feel so alone on this journey!

  • jd80- did you experience any vomit/diarrhea when starting the elimination diet? i am very sick a few days in and not sure if related or just coincidence.
