Mirena vs mini-pill vs condoms

DH is getting deployed in the fall (90% sure-his commander says 100% but they don't have orders so DH is still skeptical). We will probably try for #2 shortly after he gets home. I don't know that Mirena is worth the few months coverage we need, but the mini-pill scares me with how time sensitive it is. I feel like I'd use condoms with it anyway so why not just go with condoms alone. Are you as confused as I am yet?

I've done all the clinical research for each and know the pregnancy risks, side effects, etc. If you where in my shoes and each was equally an option, what would you do. I've asked DH and he is no help whatsoever.

I wouldn't get an IUD if I only needed BC for a few months. When will you know for sure if he is getting deployed? The mini-pill is still a very effective form of BC so I'd probably go with that. I hate condoms though.

mini pill made me the biggest b!tch,,,,and gain weight...i stopped and we just used condoms until we ttc again. not sure what i will do this time.....stilll deciding if we will ttc #3 sometime

I haven't tried the mini but other hormone BC makes me crazy emotional. If hormone BC makes you emotional I would skip it, and go condoms only. But since you've never tried it I'd say try the mini and condoms and if u don't like mini, ditch it and go condoms only. You won't need it once DH deploys so it's a good temp solution.

I agree with pp, I wouldn't do the IUD for just a few months. I hate all hormonal forms of BC so I probably would just stick it out with the condoms for the few months.

I'm opting for Mirena, but if it was only for a couple months I'd just use condoms. I was on the mini pill once and hated it,

I'll be doing the mini-pill + breastfeeding (I'm still up every 2-4 hours, so I really don't need any birth control technically). We hate condoms, and I tolerate hormonal birth control extremely well.

I wouldn't get an IUD if you plan to TTC within a year or two. That's where we are, and my doctor essentially said it's a lot of trouble and expense for a short time frame. We would cope if our next pregnancy wasn't exactly timed as we'd like it, so I'm fine with a larger risk on the mini pill. I do plan to set an alarm on my cell to tell me to take it.

We're planning on TTC within the next two years, but I got the IUD just out of convenience.

In your case, with DH leaving so soon and wanting to TTC when he gets back, I'd be using condoms to avoid the hormones.

I am opting for Mirena, even though I will be TTC within the next two years as well, because its actually cheaper with my insurance than filling a prescription every month, as I just pay a small copay to put it in and call it a day. My Rx insurance isn't as good as my normal medical.

For a few months, however, I would just use condoms. Mini pill sounds like a PITA - but I am terrible at taking a daily pill (its a wonder I never ended up pregnant by accident to be honest with you).

Thanks everyone. Its such and irritating thing not knowing what to do. I'll see if he gets orders before my 6 week check-up. If he does, I'll just use condoms. If not, I think I'll go with the Mirena. That was if he doesn't get deployed I won't be making this decision months down the road and have wasted the time using condoms when I didn't have to. I have no idea when I'll know for sure about the deployment. Almost a year ago he was told he would be leaving in April (before C was even born), then it changed to this summer and now its fall.

I EBF, but even when I'm done BFing, I cannot take a pill with estrogen in it due to a blood clotting issue. I had my 6 week check up today and had the option of an IUD, shot, or the mini-pill to take until we TTC next time. I decided against the shot for sure because I've heard some awful things about it. I opted for the mini pill, but we'll see how it goes. If i find I'm not doing well at taking it at the same time daily, I'll get an IUD.. but we plan to TTC within a year or two at the most and I agree with token that it seems like more trouble than its worth for that. We'll see.

I'd go with the condoms. We used them successfully in the timeframe between having my DS and getting pregnant with DD. I'm not a fan of hormonal bc in any form, so that would be my choice.
