XP: EP, mastitis, potentially questionable information

I had my son 3 weeks ago and was visiting my parents out of state. This past weekend, my sister and her 4 kids were here for 3 days and on the last day, they found out her 1 year old had a staph infection in his diaper area. I later found out that he had been playing with all my breast pump parts that I thought were clean. The same day I developed a fever of 103 that has lasted through today and although I EP, my supply dropped from about 8 oz per pump session to barely 4oz. I realized that my left breast was red and painful as well and was producing the least and despite drinking lots of water, I felt very dehydrated. Because my OBGYN is in another state I had to try to find someone who would see me for cheap since my insurance didn't cover out of state visits. The doctor I saw said that I had mastitis and it was caused by stapylococcus or streptococci bacteria transmitted through a baby's nose or throat when breastfeeding. He also said I need to throw away any of the milk I pumped since my fever started and I can continue to give pumped milk but only from the right breast. He has me on antibiotics. He also told me to use cabbage leaves for the next week, but I remember my lactation consultant back home said to only use them sparingly unless you want to reduce your supply.

Could I have gotten mastitis from my sister's son since I don't breastfeed and have kept a fairly regular pumping schedule?

Do I need to throw out the milk pumped since my fever?

Is the info about feeding milk from the right breast and dumping the milk on the left while on antibiotics correct?

Thanks!

I have mastitis and on antibiotics and was told to nurse and keep pumping every two hours, nothing said about throwing away the pumped milk.

As for the possible transmission, I don't know.

  • I had mastitis and was on antibiotics and my doctor said to continue feeding the baby all the milk I pumped.  The infection does not pass back to the baby.  FWIW I EP also.

  • The best thing you can do is continue to empty that breast. It will help clear up the infection faster.

The milk is fine, if anything I think it is better for the baby because your body is going to produce things to help fight the infection and that will be passed on to the baby helping the baby's immune system.
