Gimme some perspective re: SLEEP at NIGHT

Don't get me wrong, I am beyond grateful for so many MANY things. DD is healthy and just amazing. I know I have many blessings to count.

That said (ha!), I just am getting more and more weary of the sttn thing. I know I KNOW she is only 7 weeks old. A newborn, practically! But my gosh, it's so hard to not compare to your first child, who was practically doing 8 hour stretches by this time.

She naps during the day awesome. At least 3 naps - one of which is at least 2 hours long. But at night she goes about 2-3 hours at a time. We're SO very lucky to get a 4 hour one.. though, we have gotten them more and more frequently lately.

I guess I am just tired. It's a lot rougher than I anticipated being a SAHM of 2 little ones. It would be so much nicer if she'd go longer at night.. like now! I know, I am being silly.. give it time.. it's normal.. etc etc..  I think I need to take a message board hiatus - bc it seems all I read (or at least focus in on!) is how 'my 4 week old normally sleeps 6 hours...' type posts.   Eh..  just a rambly post, I suppose!  Continue on!

Re: Gimme some perspective re: SLEEP at NIGHT

  • DS is almost 2 months and he is sleeping 2-3 hours at a time at night.  (Like you a 4 hour stretch once in a while.)  As long as he keeps sleeping until about 6-7am I'm fine and I don't mind the short spurts, it is when he decides not to go back to sleep at 4am that kills me.  I keep telling myself any day now he will give me 5 hours!

  • My two month old goes 2-3 hours at night.  We had a couple of nights around 6 weeks where she went for 4 hours, but otherwise, it is just 2 hours (3 is lucky!).  so I am right there with you!

  • I actually was on the verge of tears one night about a week and a half ago since it seemed like every other baby the age of mine or younger was STTN the night and mine wasn't and volia that night he slept from 10pm-5am. I couldn't believe it since the longest we'd ever made it before that was 3am and usually it was more like 1:30am. Now he's been sleeping until 5am most every night so you'll get there. It seemed like once he dropped that feeding his body just reset to wake for the next one rather than slowly pushing the wakeup time later so he made a lot of progress all at once. Good luck!!!

Me, too.  All the STTN posts make me want to cry!  I'm still living on 5-6 hours of sleep a night, broken into 2-3 hour stretches.  I'm also very happy when DS goes back to sleep after his 5 a.m. feeding, since I tend to sleep best in the morning for whatever reason.  I can't nap during the day because I work part time (have been since 3 weeks) and tutor (since 2 weeks).  When I am home, DS doesn't take long naps, and I need the short ones to get housework done.  On the weekends, DH wants to go places and do things.  I'm about ready drop :(

  • I don't think I've ever posted on this board but I am/was in total agreement with you about all the STTN posts for young NB's!! Sooooo frustraiting when you're lucky to get 1.5-2 hours chunks. I had actually convinced myself that she was never going to get better because she had gotten worse since week 6ish where she had several nights of 3-4 HR stretches.

But if you want any hope, my DD was 10 weeks last tuesday and had terrible days tuesday and Wednesday- not sleeping well, fussy, etc... I think her 3 month growth spurt came early. Then, magically, she slept from 9:30 to 3:30 the next night. I was actually really upset and nervous that I didn't hear her. I forgot to turn the monitor on and with the ac/fans running I had convinced myself that I hadn't heard her crying in the room next door to us. Well, and I really hope I don't jinx myself by saying this, shes done it every night since then! I'm still paranoid as hell that I'm not hearing her or something but I'm glad she's doing better! Now if only I could fall asleep earlier to take full advantage of this....
