If you are already a Mom, was your 1st baby "late"?

I'm bored at work and the Thanksgiving plans thread got me started thinking about when my baby will come...if s/he will be early, on time, or late. I've always heard (OWT maybe?) that "first babies are always late".

Those who already have babies, when did LO arrive? I know there are a lot of variables and this is highly unscientific but please indulge my curiosity

DD arrived 3 hrs before her due date! Which I was very happy about because I didn't want to be pregnant for (possibly) 10 more days!

I wish I knew. My first had to be induced just before 36 weeks. My second was born at 38 weeks 1 day, and my third was induced early (38 weeks according to my O date, 39 weeks according to u/s), but when I got to the hospital, they said I probably would have been in myself the next day or so. I will likely be induced again as a precautionary thing since I've had fluid issues in each pregnancy, but we'll discuss it more when we get closer.

My opinion is, and maybe this will be unpopular, first babies should be late unless it's medically necessary! Then it doesn't set the tone for the rest of your kids! I had to deliver DD1 shy of 36 weeks...when I passed that point with DS, I was so ready to be done! I don't think one pregnancy has any effect on another either. I have one friend who had her first a few weeks (five I think) early. The next was a little closer to her due date. The third went past her EDD. I have no idea what will happen with her fourth!

Nope. DD was born one day early. I was afraid she would be late, because I was born 2 weeks late! But nope, went into labor 2 days before my EDD and she was out in the wee hours of 39w6d.

OP, I went into labour naturally when my water broke at 38w5d

Induced at 41w 4d due to a failed test (everything was fine, just bad timing for the test).

It is actually not an OWT that most first time pregnancies go later- the average for a healthy first pregnancy is 41w1d. I feel like I need to stick that in wherever I can because going past your due date is SO much easier when you're prepared for it!

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2342739 is an abstract since I couldn't easily find the article that I was looking for that was based off of that research.

Also, FWIW, research doesn't show any increase in negative outcomes for mother or baby until after 42 weeks. (I can find that source if needed, but I'm lazy and want to eat my orange while the kid naps).

I was induced because of gestational diabetes, but was in early labor when I went in. She was right on time because they wouldn't let me go late for health reasons.

DS was one week late. I ended up being induced, which I don't recommend! I'm going to try and avoid that at all costs this time around, even if that means having the baby on Christmas!

I had DD really early, the day I turned 35 weeks pregnant. A day earlier and I would not have been able to deliver at our local hospital. It was also a really fast labor and delivery for a first child according to the hospital staff, I gave birth within 2 hours of arriving at the hospital.

DS came at 39 weeks. My MW said I would probably be late & I was thrown for a loop when he came a week early. My temp at work was supposed to start the next day & I was supposed to train her. Oops.

I was induced with DD at 41w2d, barely dilated or effaced, and ended up with an emergency c/s. So now I am pretty much anti-induction if the baby's doing fine other than being pokey. DH and I were both born later, and vaginally. I was four weeks late, seriously, although who knows if my mom's EDD was accurate.

Both of mine were late. I was induced at 41 and 5 with my 1st, and had a c/s at 41 and 2 with my second.

I am really hoping I go into spontaneous labor with this LO.

DS was 5 weeks prem too and I had a super fast labour. I went from first signs of labour to 8cm in 4.5 hours. I was helicoptered to hospital for an emergency c-section as he was breech with the cord around his neck and under his arm. Hopefully #2 has a way less dramatic entry into the world!

That's scary! I hope you have a less dramatic delivery this time around.

I was induced at 38w due to low fluid, and ended up with a c-section because my daughter's heart rate was dropping during contractions. This time I really hope to go into labor on my own before 41 weeks. They'll make me schedule a repeat c-section if I go beyond that.

My DS was 5 weeks early. He could have been a lot earlier and I am happy he waited that long. My mom had my brother and I early and I think my mom's mom had hers early I know my Dad's mom had all her's early also.

My daughter was exactly a week late. This time around we joke that this baby will be a week early because my whole family knows how much I love Thanksgiving and they think it would be funny for me to miss dinner due to being in labor at the hospital. I don't think that's funny at all!
