Those who jogged while pregnant

Up until how many weeks were you able to keep going? Any tips? Thanks!

Re: Those who jogged while pregnant

  • I ran until ~30 wks.  After ~20-22 wks I bought the Gabriella maternity support band to make me more comfortable as I was measuring ~6 wks ahead due to a large fibroid.   I was also pregnant in winter so I mainly stuck to the treadmill b/c we had a lot of snow/ice/slippery weather here.  I would have liked to keep running but ~30 wks my belly just felt too uncomfortable anymore.  Since ~36 wks though I've felt a bit better so I'm doing some intervals on the treadmill now-slow jogging and then walking(more walking than jogging though) and it feels great!

  • I ran daily with Sarah until the day I went into labor, at exactly 40 weeks. I just got slower and reduced my weekly mileage from 60 to 40 miles in the end. I used a support belt in the last few weeks, but I was pretty small so there wasn't a lot of bounce. I am still running daily (about 8 miles) with this baby, no support belt yet.

  • i have been running about 3 miles every other day, I swim the other days, and just getting slow but makes me feel really good.  My knees are getting a little sore though so not sure how much longer I will go but might just turn into walking but for now- i try to do 3 miles about 3x wk and then 1 miles swim 2-3x week.  just depends but getting more and more tired now so i am taking more off time- just do what you are comfortable with and stop when you don't feel right- that was advice from my doctor- basic common sense!  GL to you!
  • With baby #2 I went until 39 weeks 4 days (4 days before I delivered).  Baby #3 I'm still running now.  But very slow and about 2-3 miles at a time.

And ditto the Gabriella maternity band.

I jogged the whole time, of course had to slow down and not go as far as the months progressed. I ran (more like a slow jog) all the way up to about 3 weeks before delivery. A tip that I have, it helps to wear 2 sports bras!

  • I am at 24 weeks, and have still been running 3 miles every morning. Well, running may not be the best word to describe it...jogging may be better. I've slowed down to a 10.30 mile pace so it takes me a little time, but I feel great afterwards! I stopped running an any incline and that has helped a lot with cramps. I haven't bought a support band yet, but I think I will. Having to pee the whole time is not a pleasant experience!
  • I ran 3 miles three times a week from 26-35weeks. I was scared to run in the dead of winter while pregnant, but would occasionally use the treadmill at the gym (bothers my knees though). I just reduced my speed big time as I got bigger. I switched to walking at 35 weeks simply out of my bladders inability to handle a bouncing baby. :)

  • I ran up to 38 weeks, which is when I gave birth. I ran/walked 3 miles a few days a week towards the end and used a maternity belt for support. I would have run more but as the weather got warmer, I moved my workouts indoors (elliptical machine) since its not good to overheat while pregnant. But I never ran on the treadmill because a) I hate treadmills and b) I was afraid of falling while pregnant (I'm a bit of a klutz :-P)

  • My last run was 3 days before I delivered. Prior to 12 weeks, I took it easy (run/walk) just because I was being very cautious. From 12 - 20, I felt great and was running a decent pace 3 or 4 times a week. At about 30 weeks, I started slowing down pretty significantly. I dropped down to 2-3 runs per week, my pace slowed and running was generally just harder. I kept running until 39w4d, so right until the end.

Listen to your body, don't be afraid to take breaks to walk or catch your breath. Pregnancy is a marathon, not a sprint so don't burn yourself out early on. You're much better off doing moderate runs throughout your whole pregnancy than hammering runs early on and needing to stop at four or five months along.

  • I'm so impressed by all you ladies!  My knees and hips have felt too unstable running so I switched to the elliptical and stationary bike early on - I'm jealous - I miss running!
