Are you charting feedings, diapers, sleep?

They made me do the first two at the hospital and I was going to continue once I got home but in the struggle to get sleep and care for M I completely forgot about it. Is this bad? I'm very certain that she's eating, pooping and peeing enough. Is it necessary to keep track of these things?

Re: Are you charting feedings, diapers, sleep?

  • I did for a long time with my first!

This time, not at all. I only did it in the hospital to help keep the nurses in the loop.

I feed DD when she's hungry, change her when she's dirty, and she's growin' like a weed! If there were some kind of an issue, then I would keep track, but she's doing great. Why add the extra work/stress on ourselves to keep a journal?

  • I tried for the first week, but couldn't remember to do it. We got the Itzbeen timer and used it until C's weight was back up and I still use it at night so I don't have to remember how long it has been since she ate and got a clean diaper.

  • I don't think it's necessary to track these things but I'm very type A so I have been keeping track of all of this (minus the sleep) since the day he was born. I track when and how much he eats, when he poops/pees, and when and how much I pump.

This! If I notice a problem, I'll do it. But she's growing and I change a million wet diapers a day so I'm not concerned. My pedi hasn't requested it, either, so I don't see the need.

  • Seems like making work.

I've got plenty to do. I don't need to make up work. I did it in the hospital, but now I'm happy if I can remember what boob to give first (and I only remember that because I move a bracelet back and forth).

  • Only the first week. Now I konw she's eating enough and she wakes herself to eat, and there's ALWAYS a diaper to change, so I don't worry about it!

Like token, I'm lucky if I give her the right boob first.  I switch a ponytail holder back and forth from my wrists to try to keep is straight...and I sometimes still get it wrong.

I was doing the bracelet thing but I got lazy, now I just grab my boob and offer the firmer one! I have a fairly good memory, so I try to just remember when LO eats and sleeps.

This. It keeps me sane especially b/c I have my moments of baby brain, it's nice to not have to try and keep track in my brain.

I also like tracking so I can page through and see his ever evolving routine.

I did the bracelet thing too, I was using a silly band and my 2 year old decided it was hers.  So now I check for the firmer boob too!

  • I do because I don't remember anything for more than an hour and we've had trouble with BF and gaining weight so we've needed to keep track of what she's taking in.

  • I tracked feedings and diapers for the first week so that I could give the public health nurse accurate information when she asked how he was doing during the checkups.   I used an App for my iPad and it was a lot easier.  After the first week I didn't bother because I knew he was getting enough milk and it was going through him ok.

  • I did in the hospital, but haven't since then.  I make a mental note when she eats and falls asleep, but I just feed on demand and let her sleep when she wants.

ETA: Violet had also gotten back to her birth weight by 5 days after birth, and the pediatrician told me I could stop waking her to eat at her one week appointment.  So there really isn't a reason for me to do anything more than read her cues.

Ha! Me too. I did it at first but when the pedi didn't ask for it, I stopped. He pees, poops, sleeps, and eats plenty.
  • I barely did at the hospital and haven't since.

  • DS had weight issues in the beginning, so I started tracking feedings and diapers on the WTEWYE Iphone App. I know I can stop doing this, but it's relatively easy and helps me remember which side to nurse from. I'm also still very paranoid about his weight gain, so it helps ease my mind, because I would not remember how many feedings or diaper changes he had a day.

  • i did for the first week or so because she was so sleepy at first it helped remind me when i needed to wake her and i wanted to know the amount of poopy/wet diapers.  but then she gained back her weight and we got in a rhythmn and i wasnt as worried about the breastfeeding anymore so i stopped.. but sometimes i still write down in notepad when she ate or when she fell asleep for naps so i can remember cuz otherwise id forget!

  • We tracked for the first couple weeks after the NICU, since he was in for being underweight, but stopped once he had regained everything and then some.

  • I had a head injury a couple years ago and my memory is really bad because of it. I have been using an app on my iPad since we got home from the hospital. It tracks everything, but I only do feedings (we do 20 mins on each side every time and it has a timer and tracks last side), diapers, and pumping (so I have an easier time remembering how long it has in the fridge). It also tracks vaccines, weight/height, milestones, anything you want to put in. I know it is excessive and obsessive, but I feel like I need it due to my memory issues.

  • We had to in the hospital and until their 2 week follow up appointment bc they lost a ton of weight (more than 10%) in their first few days. Now we don't. They never sleep more than 3 hours anyway and they eat, poop, and pee constantly.

  • We were writing feedings and diaper changes down (FI made this cute little spreadsheet/log for us) for the first week.  Then a found this awesome app for my itouch that kept track of everything and did that for the better part of two weeks.  The past couple days I haven't been tracking anything.  I doubt I'll do it anymore unless there seems to be a problem with diapers or whatever.  Now that we are into a routine I know what to expect and don't see the need for the log.  At first though it really helped me remember when I needed to feed him again, and how long he'd been nursing each session.
  • I do and did the same for DD. Funny enough I was looking back at her chart today to remember what the heck I did with her back then. Not necessary, but I like to see what I'm doing.

  • I downloaded an app for my smartphone and have kept it up.  I just do pumping feeding, diapers, and medicine.  There is a place to do sleep and baths too.  The medicine one is extra helpful to me, that way I don't have to remember when I have her the gripe water or how many times she's had gas drops in a day.  (We had a bad time with gas a week ago so she was getting quite a bit).

If I was still writing it down, I would have stopped by now.  I had to write it down in the hospital.  I got yelled out when I forgot to..."If you write it down, we don't have to bother you if you're asleep."  Yes, rude nurse, like you taking my temp and blood pressure, etc doesn't bother me if I'm asleep. (sorry, mini vent there)

  • I did until her two week check up, just in case she hadnt gained an appropriate amount of weight. Since then, I stopped. I dont feel the need to monitor her that closely anymore. This is my first baby, and I doubt I'll monitor it outside of the hospital if we have any more children.
    My overly happy baby girl!

  • I only charted in the hospital for the nurses information. She has been growing and gaining weight so well I didn't feel the need to keep up charting once we got home.

I tried for the first day or two home, but I always forgot, so I gave up on trying.
