Baby Names

Honest opinions on our name choices, please!

Boy names were easy and it came down to James or Carter which we both really like but the fact that James goes better with DH's name as a mn was the deciding factor.  Girl names were very hard for us and there were very few that we agreed on.  Now that we've decided on both, DH is set but I tend to overthink things and am not sure these are the perfect names.

Please give your honest opinions on each:

Boy: James Michael

Girl: Laurel Olivia

  • I really like James much more than Carter so good choice!

I prefer Lauren over Laurel but I do like the possibility of using "Elle" as a nickname.  Olivia is pretty.

  • I really like the name Laurel.

  • Personally I would never ever use such common boys' names.

The girl name is pretty, but again, Olivia is in the top 5 baby girl names.  I know, I stalked the social security admin name data base when we were picking a name for DS.

  • Lauren has always been one of my favorites, but DH hates it.  I suggested Laurel as I still love the "au" sound and surprisingly he liked it.  I let it roll around in my head for a few days and found that I REALLY liked it.  Since we're keeping our name choices a secret until LO arrives, I'm really curious how others will perceive these name choices.

I agree with this- I think Olivia is the part of the girls name I'm not sure of mostly because it is so popular.  DH has no idea about current trends and he loves this name.  Does anyone have other suggestions for a MN for Laurel?

  • Wonderful names!  I really like Laurel.

  • I LOVE the name Laurel Olivia.  What a great name.

In comparison, James Michael just seems so bland to me.

  • I like them, but my honest first reaction when I read your girl name was that my brain wanted to read "Lawrence Olivier"

  • Both Great!

I agree with you on this!  And while I love the name James, it also seems a little plain to me for a FN.  I always thought we'd use it for a MN until we put it with Michael.  I think this is exactly why I'm having second thoughts about our name choices!

  • LOVE them both, you, my dear, have fabulous taste!

  • I don't think James Michael is bland! I think it is a strong name that will age well.

Love Laurel Olivia too! Laurel is not a common name at all, and it me it doesn't really matter how common the middle name is because she won't be called by her middle name.

    Great name choices!

  • Very pretty. I prefer Lauren to Laurel, but either way it's nice.

My husband's name is James Michael. I love it. I think it is a great, classic name choice. I also really like Laurel. It's really pretty and not a name you hear all the time.

  • I like the boy name a lot, and I also like the girl name, though I find the combo somewhat hard to say.  That probably doesn't matter much though.

  • James Michael is such a classic name-- there's nothing to dislike about it.

I love Laurel-- it's one of very few left on my list. I think Olivia is fine as a MN-- I don't think that popularity matters in the same way for middle names.

  • I think James Michael is nice.  It's my brother's and deceased uncle's name.  :)  You could also go with Michael James (my dad's name, hehe) and call him James.  I definitely prefer it to Carter.

Laurel is nice but I prefer Lauren (sorry your DH doesn't like it!) or what about Lorelei?  I love Olivia.  I don't think popularity is important when it comes to a MN.

  • James Michael is my brother's name (he goes by Mike) - very good, solid choice!

Laurel Olivia - very pretty!!! I really like the name Laurel, I think it's a unique twist to names like Laura and Lauren.
