  • Heavy lifting. That will remove fat and give you a nice shape, causing you to appear leaner (what people mean by "toning up"). Work everything, not just select areas.

AMEN to this!  Women have next to impossible time of "bulking" because guys have 20% more testosterone in their bodies which gives them that definition..  The key with heavy lifting is just use good form.  If you're using good form with proper resistence Squats and Deadlifts you're going to get a strong abs in the process without the annoyances of "doing abs"...  Also, no cheating yourself on the squats, full 90degrees at the knees!  (it WILL NOT hurt your knees to squat that deep! - unless you've got severely flat feet, in which case that's what orthotics in your shoes were created for which you'd also need for running)..  Link up the scary look'n dudes who are lifting insane amounts of weight (powerlifters) and they'll fix things right up!

  • I know we all hate the "D" word, but there's some stat that ~70% of your body's composition is determined by diet.  20% by working out, and the other 10% is a split of lifestyle (sleep, stress, etc) and natural build & disposition.

And by diet, I don't mean eating South Beach bars, "light" yogurts, and other sugar free/fat free processed "food".  Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables is what I meant.  Quality of food going in is going to be the biggest thing to help you lose fat, even if you do exercise everyday.

And I TOTALLY agree with PPs about heavy lifting as well.
