School picture prices are ridiculous

I know the photography company makes their money off of pictures but really, it's ridiculous.  I got the proofs - they did each of my kids alone and then one together.  However, the way they have it set up, they make you order 3 full packages.  There is no "combo" package where you can get each kid plus the one together.  I called the company and they won't do it.  I'm so mad that I'm ready  not to order any of them!

How ridiculous is it?  I have to buy 3 packages.  The cheapest package is $26 plus tax- for each.  That means I'm spending about $85. What do I get for $85?   Four 5x7 pictures (one of each kid alone plus two together), 12 wallet pictures and 2 class photo pictures.  Why are my kids school pictures as expensive as wedding pictures???  They don't even let you just buy one picture of each.

Argh!!!!!  Anyone else going through this?

Re: School picture prices are ridiculous

  • It is pretty ridiculous.  I think once the twins join Harm in school we will just get the pictures done at Sears for them at the start of the year.  $7.99 per child is much more reasonable than $30 per kid.  This year though we just went ahead and bought them.

I hear ya.  It's like the hospital pictures when they're newborns.  I just got around to ordering DD's, and I got the smallest pkg.  W/shipping, it was about $50, but I felt kinda guilty about not ordering hers b/c I ordered DS' when he was little.

  • I would just get the pictures of them together then. I got a tiny package ($17.95) last year for DD1. It was a 4x6 (or maybe 5x7) and a class picture...it was in a cute, but cheesy mat. The biggest package was kind of neat, it was around $50. I actually would have gotten it, but I didn't really like the picture of her. I hope that her pictures come out better next year so I can spring for it. I normally bring them to JCP and get the $7.95 package.

  • yeah, our cheapest package was $29.50.

honestly, I scanned the photos, bought the smallest package of each individually which included one class pic.  the pics of them together I just sent back. I can go to the mall and have better pics taken for cheap.

We get our son's pictures taken at Sears every year.  We probably won't start buying them from the school until he gets to kindergarten.

  • I just got around to ordering DD's preschool photos yesterday and am still ticked off at myself for the amount of money I spent.  My Mom will spring for part of it because she wanted one each of two different poses, but it's still such a rip-off.

My biggest gripe is that the school does portraits twice/year.  A friend's daughter is in elementary school and they take portraits three times a year.  I'm flabbergasted!  Weren't school pictures once/year when we were all younger?

I've decided that going forward I'm only purchasing an 8x10" for our family photo wall and the class photo and if anyone else wants anything, they have to spring for it themselves.  We do a family photo session in the fall with a fabulous local photographer (see sig) in preparation for our holiday cards and I'd much rather give out copies of those photos to the grandparents and aunts and uncles than the cheesy school portraits.
