Nursing times...changing?

So I've been so busy, I don't know if this question has been posted or not but I need help!  So Brett started off nursing both sides, Doctor said he should nurse between 10-15 minutes a side.  I started pumping and a suggestion was to try and nurse one side at a time.  And I always had to break his latch to switch sides anyways, and sometimes after I would do that, he wouldn't eat much on the other side.  So since I've been nursing one side, he would nurse from about 20-30 minutes at a time.  Sometimes if he was sleepy he would go for longer.

I've been giving him an occasional bottle (once-twice a week), and once a few weekends ago, he had three bottles in one night (breastmilk bottles).  There was no problem.  Then this past Saturday, he had three to four bottles because DH and I were in a wedding.  He seemed to have caught a bug because he wasn't himself sunday-tuesday.  He's doing much better, but now during the day he doesn't nurse for more then 10 minutes a feeding...only if he's sleepy does he nurse for more then that.  He is suddenly sleeping longer at night though, 8 hours straight Sunday night, 6-6.5 hours straight Monday-Wednesday night.  He gets 1-2 feedings at more then 20 minutes, but the rest are right around 10 minutes...is this normal?  How long do your babies nurse for?   TIA

Re: Nursing times...changing?

  • I am not keeping track of how long Stella feeds, but she does nurse more often for shorter periods of time now that it's so hot.  That might be because she's thirstier yet less hungry and foremilk is mostly water while hindmilk is thicker and fills them up more.  Babies' eating patterns change - they're not that much differet from us - sometimes we're hungrier, sometimes less hungry Smile

Btw, at nigt, Stella eats for much shorter periods than during the day.

    Sounds normal to me.

  • Kaitlyn is bottle fed BM during the week at sitters but the last couple weeks her nursing times have increased and usually only one side. does seem to be a little more laid back and doesn't suck as fast.

Two months was about the time my DD started getting even faster at eating.  She started out bfing for about 20 minutes on one side, then 5-10 on the second.  Now at 3 months it's literally about 10 minutes, maybe 15 total for both sides and burping.  Sometimes she'll go 20-30 for her last feeding before bed, but I think that's more of a comfort thing.  And by the way, my DD is gaining weight like a champ, which is all that matters.  She was born 7 -11 and now weighs almost 15!
