mothers of grunters, come on in

i don't know what else to say besides, it's getting old.  DD grunts pretty much 24/7.  I've gotten used to it for the most part, but lately she's taken it to a new level.  DH said this morning, "i don't understand...is she trying to power up her crib?"

and don't even get me started on other people who hear her...they get that stupid smile on their face and say, "oh i know what she's doing!" no...you don't know what "she's doing." nobody knows what she's doing.  she's not pooping, and even if she was, is it really reason to give me that stupid smile? are you going to change her?

so how are all of your grunters doing?

Re: mothers of grunters, come on in

  • DS used to grunt a lot but it has tapered off, I am not sure if it is because he has figured out he can make a variety of other sounds too or if he is more efficient at getting out the gas and that was the cause. Hopefully your little grunter will move on soon too.

LOL.  I know exactly how you are feeling.  My LO is almost 10 weeks.  2 weeks ago it reached it's peak and I actually posted something similar - I just wanted to know if it would ever stop.  Most people said it took 2 to 3 months for theirs to stop.

I am happy to report that in the last 2 weeks it has slowly tapered off.  LO still grunts but usually he is pooping or farting.  No more all night long.  I hope your grunter ends her reign soon - let me tell you, I do not miss it at all!

  • DS's grunting isn't as bad as it used to be, but still annoying. He chooses to turn it up full force in the middle of the night after he eats and is kind of awake. It's SO loud. I also hate it when people assume he's pooping. I used to just smile and nod but now I just ignore them.

SOOOOO true!!!  My grunter is doing quite well.  Grunting all day, every day, especially right when she wakes up.  That's how I know when I should get the bottle ready in the morning.  This way I can pick her up before a long, red-faced cry.

  • Our grunter typically grunts before she falls asleep laying down (not so much in your arms) and a good half hour before she wakes up. She is so loud! She doesn't seem to be in pain, and it definitely ISN'T a pooping sound. Those are completely different. She does sound like she is ready to power a motor boat though.

  • I have grunting x2! In the NICU I thought something was wrong with them, but now I'm use to it, but they even do it in their sleep. It's crazy!

Agreed!  It is SO annoying when people say this.  DS is just noisy, it doesn't mean he is pooping!   my DH has told me to think about it at night as DS making sure he is tucked in right, this helps me sleep better and not get up every two seconds to make sure he is okay.

  • Just wanted to say I'm in the same boat. I guess I'm looking forward to when some distraction or something works to maybe direct him off of that noise, but I know at 3 weeks and change that its just too early.

I totally agree with the pooping comments too. MIL will make a comment EVERY SINGLE TIME, and since he's doing it practically all day, you can imagine how much fun that is. There is no physical way he could poop that much!

  • sDD did grunt the first few weeks. We could not get ANY sleep. She is now in her own room and it helps. But she seems like she has just outgrown the grunting! Hopefully your LO will soon :)

  • Another mother of a grunter here. And I totally agree, OP, about the comments you get from people...UGH, it's annoying!

We changed his formula the last couple of days and it seems to have cut down on it...so we'll see what happens long term.

  • hahah, Penny grunts when she's awake, asleep, eating, pooping, not pooping ect.

It drives me crazy! I can't wait until she grows out of it!

  • My DS grunted a lot for the first 2 mos of his life. Whenever he grunted, it seemed like he was pain though...it just didn't seem normal. Anyways, turned out he was allergic to dairy/soy products and had acid reflux. So after cutting the dairy and soy out of my diet (i breastfed) and getting him on prevacid, he was a whole new baby. Occasionally he grunted-- cause most babies do, but it wasn't all the time like before.
