Need Some Help - Formula related

DS was diagnosed with a lactose intolerance around 2 weeks old (DD was lactose intolerant as well, but was able to tolerate cow's milk around 18 months). Although being on soy has made a big difference, I still feel like we haven't solved all of his problems. After multiple calls to the pedi, I believe it's time for me to find a new one. The last time I called, they told me to switch him to a soy based formula... which is what he is already on!! Here is what I am dealing with, would you all let me know what you think?

Spitting up, Gassy (burps like a man... sometimes hard to burp), Constipated (and the spit up is horrible if he hasn't had a bowl movement in the past 24 hours), congestion/runny nose (usually gets worse right after a bottle), eczema (like craddle cap, in different places at different times), red rash around his anus (no bumps, just red skin), and the usual fussy baby attitude.

  • try putting him on alimentum for couple of weeks.  he can have MSPI. 60% of children that can't handle milk, also can't handle soy.  Google MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance)  which is pretty common and there are a few moms that are dealing with it on here. (my son is allergic to milk, soy, eggs, peanuts)

Also, this is completely my own opinion from everything i've been reading.... and many will disagree -so once again -this is IMO only.. i would avoid soy for boys especially.  (personally i would avoid it for boys and girls) b/c soy has too much estrogen.  and nowadays, soy is re-engineered so it's not as healthy as you think it is.   I lived on soy during my first pregnancy and now i'm a soy free vegetarian due to all the stuff i have read on it -which isn't a walk in the park.

watch this video if you have time.

oh.. also -change your pedi asap! you need one with compassion and understanding -not someone that is ignoring your issues.  I called my pedi multiple times a day for months when we first found out about the allergy and she sometimes called me at 8 pm to see how things are going.

Thank you!! I am so glad this board exists!

I was able to get direct contact with a different pediatrician who is on the same page as I am and I believe Alimentum is our next step. :) My fingers are crossed!

  • Sounds like my situation exactly...DS #2 has had horrible gas, reflux, eczema covering his entire body since about 2 months old...finally at 6 months my pedi said switch to soy...we did and he began projectile vomiting and the eczema and gassiness remained...called pedi and they said start him on soy!  Finally i refused to leave the office until they gave me a script for allergy testing since they would not write a referral to an allergist (they felt he did not have any allergies!) turns out he is allergic to soy!  eggs, and peanut and is probably lactose intolerant....We put him on alimentum 3 weeks ago and his skin is almost completely clear of eczmema and we are reducing his reflux mediciine successfully! your LO has similar symptoms to mine. I would ask for allergy testing since 40% or so kids that are allergic to milk are also allergic to soy.  GL
