Negative skin test, but positive blood test

So disappointed right now.  We had a negative skin test for soy on Friday at the allergist, but they just called and said the blood test was positive.  I had already started dreaming of all the new foods she could eat.  ::Sigh::

Re: Negative skin test, but positive blood test

  • UGH, how awful!  I am so sorry!  I don't know how common it is that the skin test is that much different from the blood test?  FWIW, DS tested positive for soy on the blood test (he has only had it done once) and not on the skin testing.  He had already been having soy and they said because he tolerates it, they would consider that a false positive.  Hopefully sometime soon she can eat soy!  How often do they test?

  • DS #3 tested positive for soy (blood test) but he's been on soy formula/milk since he was a couple of months old with no reactions.  It might be a false positive.  Will they do a challenge to verify the differing results?

  • I need to talk to the allergist.  The nurse is the one that gave me the result.  She had 30-some things tested, but secretly gave me the result for soy since I have been so anxious to confirm a negative result.

I hope they do a challenge.  I would think the skin test is more accurate than blood.  She is allergic to dairy still, so that is why I was so excited to have a negative test to soy.

  • im sorry! that really sucks.  we had the same -negative on the skin test and positive blood test.  Hopefully that just means the levels are low and she will outgrow it soon.

  • with the mixed results and her other limitations- I'd push for a food challenge or a re-test before one year.  It would be fantastic if you could add new foods for her and the tests can have false positives/negatives.  I hope the dr. can give you more info.
