How do you teach LO to come down the steps?

DD's a pro at getting up the stairs.  But now she wants to come down too.  We teach her to go down one step at a time on her butt, but I think she's still a little too young to fully grasp this.  How did you teach your child to come down the stairs?

  • We taught her to go down on her belly.  Not exactly sure how we "taught" her; I think we just went up and down several times. We would also say "turn around" before letting her try to go down.  She's now a pro at getting up and down. :)

  • We taught DS to turn around and come down on his tummy backwards.  He's wanting to learn to go down forward on his bum or walking like the girls, but he fell down the stairs recently so I've been making him turn around again.  He's just so tiny for his age!  His legs honestly just aren't long enough!
  • He just started going down on his stomach. I let him walk down if he was holding my hand - around 15 months - and that's how he goes down now.

  • I taught her to slide down on her belly. I kept saying, "feet first" and kind of helped move each leg down one at a time. I did this several times a day and by the third day she was indpendent on the steps.

  • I just taught my LO how to come down the stairs! I had been trying for a while, but this last time, he finally caught on!

I had him sit down and scoot down to the next step. He loved it, and for about three days would say, "coot, coot" as he went down each step. He quickly learned that he could stand up, and walk down slowly, by keeping one hand on the step above him and reaching his foot to the step below him. He did that for about 3 more days. Now he walks down and puts his hand on the wall for extra support.

It was such a relief to me when he learned how to come down the stairs. I certainly still want to be there every time he goes down the stairs, but I am more confident that he is less likely to get hurt.

  • We had them come down on their belly feet first until about 18 months.  Now they either scoot on their butt or hold my hand to climb down.

  • When we moved into our new house about three months ago, the very first day I sat on the top step with her and we scooted down them together. We did this a few times. Then she climbed back up and when she got to the top and turned to see me at the bottom I told her to sit, she did and then scooted on her own. She's been doing it ever since. She figured out the belly trick on her own and does that sometimes as well. She's recently started trying to walk down them while holding the rail, which is fine by me but scares Sean to death.

  • We didn't teach him.  We just let him play around on the stairs (supervised, of course!) and he figured it out on his own.  He slides down, feet, first, on his belly.  He gets off the bed the same way (though we did some modeling with this and a lot of talking about it as we did it).  He's getting to the point where he wants to walk down regularly- again, he did this on his own.

  • Stomach, he turns his head to make sure he has good footing each time he approaches a step. He is a very cautious kid - he is 18 months and was bout 15 or 16 months when I showed him.
