Yeah, fun topic, right? I posted about DD being scared of public potties. We traveled last week, and she flat out refused to use a public potty. We tried potty seat inserts and her little kid potty. No dice. After she held her pee for 10 hours (and complained of pain...she drank a lot of water), I finally put a pull up on her, spent 35 minutes in a rest area telling her to go in the pull up and promising an immediate change, she finally went. We did pull ups whenever we knew a home like toilet would not be available. It was pure torture.
Fast forward to this week. She is back home, and it is all potty as usual for her. Until she went to her school today. She flat refused their toilet, which was not previously an issue with her. She held it for 8+ hours, prompting a call from her teacher who is concerned she might get a UTI (very valid thought). DH went to get her, and she peed a little bit in her pants when he arrived. She refused the potty even with him there. He changed her and brought her home. She went right to the toilet, and went and went and went. This is not good. She is potty trained completely, and hates pull ups. She won't use the kid potty at home. Just the "big potty" with her seat insert in place. Her school has the tiny kid toilets with a non auto flush on them. I just don't get her fear at school. It has not been an issue until after we traveled.
Thoughts? Tips? I worry about a UTI.
Re: Holding urine? Longish
We're starting the potty training adventure next week. Although we have been talking about it and practicing sitting on the potty for a few weeks now.
Anyways... you're scaring me. Haha, jk. I would maybe read some books about pottying in different places. And get a conversation going with her about it. Tonight we read Potty Animals, which was all about these preschool animals who all had a different problem with going potty at school. It was a little strange, but I've seriously been trying to read as many potty books as possible lately. Good luck!
Any idea why she hates public potties?
Like if she thinks their dirty, maybe you could take some wipes with you and she could watch you wipe them down? or something like that?
DD I know freaks out in some public bathrooms because the flush is so loud. So if there's a chance it's something like that, you could not flush until she's out of the stall.
IDK. I think until you can get her to communicate why she doesn't like them, it's gonna be really hard to solve the problem.
GL!
Ellie is terrified of the hand dryers. Public bathrooms really are no fun.
If you can get her back into a public stall, I've heard a lot of moms say they put a post-it over the automatic flush sensor so it doesn't flush too soon. Do you think she'd go in with you while you use the bathroom so she could see that it wouldn't flush? Maybe watching you use it first would give her some more confidence? Also, Ellie loves her princess potty seats. Maybe Brenna would be more likely to use one she picks out herself? Or is there anything that motivates her that you could use to convince her to go? Ellie would never have used the potty if there hadn't been a lot of bribery involved.
