S/O nurseries....will anyone's baby NOT have a nursery?

This LO will not be getting a nursery. We have an international student living with us right now who will be here until June 2012. She is currently in what was intended to be the baby's nursery. I don't want to move her to the other spare bedroom because it is pretty small and all of her stuff won't fit in there - if you move the student's bedroom, it's in the contract that they have the option of leaving your home. We don't need the money we make from her, but it will come in really handy while I'm on mat leave for the year, so I don't want to risk her leaving.

All this means that the baby will likely be put in the small spare bedroom until it's about 7 months old and not get its own nursery. We co-sleep in the beginning so it won't be too much of a big deal, but part of me still feels guilty. I spent months on DD's nursery making it just right and this one won't even get one! I'm trying not to feel too badly about it since we can use the time and money to redecorate DD's bedroom and make it a special place for her since a lot of emphasis will be put on the baby within the next year or so.

Anyone else's baby not getting a nursery?

Re: S/O nurseries....will anyone's baby NOT have a nursery?

  • Me! I thought I was the only one! This is our first and it will not have a nursery. We live in a small 2 BD apartment and DH needs the other room as an office. So, baby will be in our room with us. We will be moving when baby is 8 mo. old and we'll look for a bigger place so he/she can have it's own room then.

  • We aren't doing a nursery. We live in a 2 bedroom townhome and plan to keep the extra room as the office/guest room. We plan to co-sleep, so the crib will go in our bedroom. I don't plan to buy a changing table, either. When LO is around 18-24 mos and we're in a bigger place, then we'll designate a room for him or her. At this time and in our situation, I don't see the point. The baby won't care either way.

  • Possibly, we will be moving in August and possibly downsizing for a few months in order to save up for this LO.  Depending on what lease term we get LO may be without a nursery for a few months (would sleep in master bedroom with us, in bassinet).  It's definitely hard to feel unsettled and not sure about where LO will go and definitely not as fun since there is no planning to do. Sad
  • Honestly, I don't think it is a big deal. This LO will be in to DD's nursery (gender neutral since we were team green), and we will be moving DD into our 3rd bedroom and will be focusing our attention on making this a little girl room. I live an a major urban area where space is at a premium, and have many friends who live downtown who have multiple kids in really small condos. In fact, one even has her two boys (2 and 3 months) set up in the walk in closet next to their bedroom, haha. I would not worry too much about it at all!! :-)

Will baby #3 be another girl?

  • Yes and no. We are renting right now and plan on staying in our place until Dec 2012, so the baby will only be in it's room for 1 year, and since we are renting I can't paint murals on the wall and I don't plan on changing the window treatments, etc (so not doing a ton of decorating). Also DH uses the closet and bathroom in that 2nd bedroom so baby will be sharing with Daddy :)

  • LO#2 will not have their own nursery for at least 6 months.  We will be moving 6 months after LO is born and I don't want to go through the work of cleaning out the spare bedroom and setting up the nursery again for the LO who might use it for 3 months by which time we will be boxing everything up and preparing to move.  I will just wait and take care of the room situation once we move.

Glad to know there are other nursery-less babies out there :)

Really, it's not like the baby will know or care either way, but a PP hit the nail on the head - I won't get to have fun decorating the nursery and daydreaming! I think that's what I'm most bummed about. But, I'll have fun decorating DD's room with her. I went to the paint store today and got a whack load of paint chips so she can have fun picking her colours :)

I know! It sucks!!  I am really in the mood to shop too but there is really no point in me getting anything until we move Sad

Dont worry about it! The babies wont know any diff, it will prob be better for them being around mommy and daddy all the time.
  • Sort of. This baby and DD will share a room for a while, so unless it's a boy, the room is decorated already for DD, and we'll just add some furniture and baby's name to the wall with DDs. If it's a boy, then we'll repaint the pink parts (pink stripes on the wall), and probably just switch the stripes to green or something. Not sure yet.
  • We're not.  We keep the baby in our room for the first 8 or 9 months, then will move to one of the other kids' rooms depending on if it's a boy or girl.  Hoping for a boy, then I won't have to put three girls in one room!

  • We didn't with DD and won't this time.  When DD was born, we lived in a carriage house with a lofted bedroom, and we all slept in the loft, including DD in her co-sleeper, until she was about six months old.  Then we moved to an apartment that was technically only one bedroom - we had a spare room that didn't have its own door or closet that we used as a study, and DD slept in our walk-in closet which had its own light and window.  Not ideal, but it worked.  This time we will be moving right after our LO is born, and we don't know what our situation will be yet, but a separate nursery is not a high priority, especially when we plan to have the baby in our room for the first few months.

  • Well, we have a number of extenuating circumstances.

DH is actually going to be 3 hours away for work (coming home on the weekends) from September to February.  We're not sure what we're going to do once the baby comes, but I will either take the baby and animals and stay with him in his extended stay hotel, or go stay with my mom (90 miles north of us).

And then, we're moving to Germany in February.  Indifferent  I'm excited, just nervous about the logistics with our animals and a newborn!

SO - we are not setting up a nursery in our current house (which we'll be putting on the rental market - another reason to not have a nursery).  We have already purchased a crib (couldn't pass up the sale we found), but will not be taking it out of the box until we arrive in Germany.

The baby will be sleeping in a PNP while we're still in the States and in a PeaPod while we're traveling to Germany and getting settled.

  • We won't be able to do one as well. We will be moving back to our home town 3 months after the baby comes, so there is no point on doing a room that I will have to take right back down. The baby will probably sleep in our room for those months anyway... Plus we are renting right now, so we wouldn't be able to paint anyway. Glad I'm not alone!

  • Nope!  You're not the only one.  This little one will share our bedroom for approximately the first 2 yrs.  Then, we will move them into the appropriate bedroom.

Nope! We live in a 500 sq foot one bedroom house, so baby will be staying in our room.

  • Nope. No nursery here either. We're in a 3 bed rental. Not wasting money on painting or curtains etc to make someone else's house look better! New baby will share with us until (s)he's sleeping through the night and then will be moved into DS's room.

We've got our eye on 2 gorgeous toddler beds. We're going to set them up as the bedroom is quite small. That way they have more room to play.

  • It's up in the air right now. We have our entire upstairs ripped down to the studs and are in the process of putting it back together (framing, electrical, plumbing, insulation, sheetrock, the whole nine yards). We are hoping to have it done before baby comes, but if not baby will be in our room until it's done and will then have their own room/nursery as soon as we get upstairs. We would like 2 out of the 3 bedrooms done upstairs so we can move upstairs while sheetrock is still being put on and we will just bunk in the babys room.

Me too. Baby will sleep in our room for the first few months, and will then move in with DD. (We're in a 3-bedroom & the third is my office.)

  • Me! We have a guest room, a spare room we use for storage, our room, and DD's room. DD slept in our room until about 10 months old, so I figure we'll have some time with this one. I'll clear out her dresser and do some organizing of the diaper station (which is in a loft area) and think we'll be good! We don't even have a crib! :D

  • Kinda sorta?

We live in a large 1 bedroom in-law apartment and our landlord offered to build us another room. Just incase she doesn't we will have the crib in our bedroom and if needed a bassinet next to our bed.

We love our place and don't want to move anytime soon so the extra room would be AMAZING!
