Trying to Get Pregnant

what does it mean when your Dr. says "wait"

I'm a newbie, but I've read several posts where their Dr. says to wait a few months before trying but after going off BC.

I"m confused....does this mean wait to have sex? Wait to start checking ovulation? What exactly are we waiting for?

  • It means use protection when you have sex, and don't TTC yet.

  • Wait to start TTC.

Generally I'd take it to mean you want to abstain from baby-making sex.  So use an alternative method of birth control (like condoms) if you want to have sex during your wait time.  Or abstain completely, if that's your preference.

  • Did you ask your doctor? That's what I would've done.

  • I feel like this is becoming more of an "old school" way of thinking, but maybe I'm wrong. My doctor never said to wait so I never really thought about it. But maybe its just because your body can take a few months to regulate itself after coming off of BCP. But I don't see how it would harm you to start right away...

  • I didn't ask a Dr. because I have not actually gone. I only heard about the waiting by reading other posts.

So maybe someonce can explain why a couple should wait or use alternate BC?

I agree. I didn't wait to start trying either.

Some people will advise to wait b/c it can take your body a while to get back to normal after coming off the pill. It can be very frustrating to not know for sure what is going on in your body, and I speak from experience. We started TTC right away after I took my last pill. The charting I had done while on BCPs were no help, and I ended up being anov (though it's unknow if it was caused by the pills) for over three months. If you haven't started charting yet, I really suggest doing so. And you can start TTC right away; there are no harmful effects on the baby or anything, but you could also wait a month or two and just get to know your body and your cycles. GL!

This is my thinking exactly...is there someway it could prevent pregnancy?

ooooh ok sorry about that, misread on my part. But again I would see my doctor - everyone's case is different.

Me too! My OBGYN did say to wait until I got one period, just to make sure my body would regulate, but only for a month. Last cycle we did not time BD very well, so I guess that counts.

  • If BC stayed in your system, then you wouldn't have to take it everyday. There is no reason to wait after coming off bcp. Even if you were to get pregnant while taking it, many studies (and real life examples) show it does not harm the baby. Now, it can take several months for your cycle to regulate or for you to even ovulate so that might be a "reason" to wait.

No, there isn't. Just like Slick, said, if it could prevent pregnancy after you stopped taking it then you wouldn't need to take it every day.

  • And also, if it were harmful then I'm sure reproductive endocrinologists wouldn't use it for infertility patients to get ready for IVF cycles and such. I am currently on bcp to suppress a cyst and we will go straight into treatments once the cyst is gone. my case is slightly different since I'm doing treatments but I'm pretty sure that a fertility specialist would know if bcp was or wasn't safe in terms of ttc right away.

  • They say to wait, not to get back to normal, but because you have those extra hormones in your body that can harm the fetus if you get pregnant right away. my SIL just miscarried after she got pregnant days after stopping the BCP. The said that was why.
  • My doctor said to wait 3 months before trying.  She is on the conservative side, but that is one of the reasons I like her!  Personally, I'm a believer that the pill can have negative residual effects for a few months for *some* people.  For one thing, it can deplete some vitamins and minerals in your body, and replenishing that doesn't necessarily happen overnight.  We ended up using NFP to avoid for 10 cycles :)
Off BCP August 2010, NFP to avoid. Start TTC May 2011. TTA December 2011 - May 2012 doctor's orders :( TTC July 2012-January 2013. Currently pursuing Napro Technology. January 2013: Napro nurse is starting me on Vitex 3 DPO and Naproxen 8 DPO until my first appointment with the doctor. Based on my charts, they highly suspect endometriosis. image
  •  I forgot to take my new pack of pills with me on vacation to start after my period finished up. Figured I had been on them for 7 years, and I'd just start up again the next month since there was no way that my body would regulate that quickly. Nope! We concieved DS that month. My doctor was not concerned that I had not waited for my body to regulate before becoming pregnant and DS is a very healthy happy kiddo. My guess is the recommendation would just be to give your body some time to sort itself out, but that didn't happen in my case.

  • I conceived my DS ON the pill.. and he is totally fine! & I just ended my last pack just under 4 weeks ago now and I ovulated this cycle (check out my chart if you want) and am now waiting to see if anything stuck or not! I've of the 'just go for it school' unless told not to be a doctor that you see regularly.

  • As others said, it means wait to TTC. I think this is more old-school, though. My OBGYN said don't worry and actively start right away (debilitatingly painful cramps, hoping to minimize the number), my FPD said stopping BCP a month early and then TTC wouldn't be a bad idea so things could get a chance to normalize. She said there was no research to show that there was any risk to getting PG right away, but it makes logical sense that things might take a bit to settle, and since I could stop the BCP a month early (had to wait for other reasons) there was no reason not to if I was willing to deal with pain. That way if I had an early miscarriage after getting PG the first month off we wouldn't always wonder if we could have prevented it.

  • I don't think it's necessary to wait because there are so many examples of women getting pregnant and delivering healthy children without waiting. But, for what it's worth, I have heard that waiting a cycle or two gives your uterine lining a chance to thicken - which I think is a good thing for implantation. I guess that implies that certain types of bcp thin out the lining. I can't remember where I heard this from though - so maybe I'm way off base. :)
    TTC #1 since 4/2011. Cycle 1 = BFN. Cycle 2 = BFN. Cycle 3 = BFP 6/28. CP 7/2. Cycle 4 = TTA. Cycle 5 = BFN. Started progesterone. Cycle 6 = Disaster. Cycle 7 = Progesterone. BFN Cycle 8 = BFN. Cycle 9 = BFN. Cycle 10 = BFP 1/1/12. C/P 1/8/12. Cycle 11 = BFP 2/3. Stick! Due 10/15/12. Baby girl arrived via c-section on 10/10/12 after 20 hours of labor. Welcome my love!
  • Here is one study that talks about not needing to wait:

    https://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/19803528/ns/today-today_health/t/can-birth-control-now-impact-pregnancy-later/

If you google, you can find many more. I know google isn't always reliable but if you find a "reliable" website it comes from with an actual doctor answering the question, it is likely a scientifically based answer.

With the exception of things like the depo shot, regular birth control does NOT stay in your system. The reasons it might be hard for you to conceive is because your OWN hormones are going crazy after coming off the bcp. And like I said in one of my previous posts, I'm pretty sure that highly respected Reproductive Endocrinologists (aka fertility specialists) wouldn't be putting women ON bcp in preparation of treatments if it were dangerous to TTC right away.

My Dr. told me to wait three months after stopping the pill to TTC because the pill (maybe just the one I used, seasonale) thins the utering lining.  She said I should give it time to thicken for implantation.  IDK if that's necessary but rather than take a risk that's what I'm doing.  One more month of condoms for us :)
