Iron Supplements? Prescription or OTC?...

Hi all --

Sorry if this is a dumb question

Got a call from my doctor that I passed my 1 hr glucose test (so relieved), but that I am low in Iron so they want me to take Iron pills -- no biggie, I figure that's pretty common

They wanted to call a prescription in for them....but I asked if I could just get them over the counter, and she said I could but I'd just probably have to take 2 pills per day that way rather than 1 (Oh well?) ...unless there's other downsides to OTC I don't know about, doesnt seem like a big deal

Anyone else just taking over the counter iron supplements rather than prescription? If so is there a type/brand you recommend?

TIA

Re: Iron Supplements? Prescription or OTC?...

  • I got told the same thing. I was told to pick up Slow FE (OTC) and to take it once a day. When I saw my NP last week, she said it wouldn't hurt if I took it twice a day, so that's what I'm doing now. I just take it with breakfast and dinner. I haven't had any issues with it.

  • I got told the same thing but they seemed to insist on the prescription.  I don't see what the big difference is, but I just went with it.

  • my doctor told me just to take the OTC

the pharmacist said it is important how you take it (with vitamin C, not at a meal, and at least an hour before or after any calcium which inhibits absorption)

  • My mw wants me to take an iron supplement as well and she suggested a liquid one thats sold at whole foods and said its better than any pill so i'm getting that. but i imagine they're all relatively the same.

  • I have a prescription, and my doctor wants me to take it twice daily.
  • I would have your Dr call it into a pharmacy.  My pharmacy sold me a 30 day supply fo $1.82 with no insurance coverage and the kind on the shelf was like $5.99

  • My dr. suggested Slow FE as well. I take one in the morning and then I take my prenatal (which is prescription, but my OB gives me free samples) which has iron at night.

  • I was told my a friend who is a pharmacist and my mother who is a nurse to go with the prescription since it is designed to work with the differences in a pregnant woman's system and be absorbed more efficiently.
