Please recommend a train table & set..I'm so overwhelmed!!

We want to get this for DS 2nd Birthday coming up in less than 2 months (and seriously, how the hell did that happen????)

There's so many options... Thomas, kidscraft, Melissa & Doug... Quite a variation in prices too. I don't mind spending the money.. I want something well made that will last.

If I went with tracks from say kids craft.. Would Thomas trains work on the tracks?? I'm a little lost!

  • Most of them are supposed to work together. We lucked out and Toddler Charlie inherited Husband Charlie's gigantic Brio train set from when he was little, and so far we've been able to use Thomas trains (because I think they're built on the Brio platform) - haven't tried Melissa & Doug or Kidcraft, but they're supposed to work, too.

  • Oh, and Charlie is a deprived child and doesn't have a train table, we force him to play with them on the floor :p

Really, I have no idea where we'd put one.

  • DS has a train table (Melissa & Doug, that we bought on Craigslist), but he prefers to play/make train "set ups" on the floor.  I think it's because the table has limited space.  He uses chairs and tabels as tunnels and we've had set ups stretch from our living room into our kitchen, etc.

With that said, all of the tracks are compatable.  We have Thomas track (passed down to us from older cousins), Melissa & Doug, Imaginarium (Toys r' Us brand) and Circo (Target brand).  All of the track are wooden and built well.  Thomas trains (the ones that say "wooden") work on all of the tracks.  The "take along" Thomas trains do not work on the wooden tracks.

I'd recommend you check ebay, too.  DH found a great deal on some track on there.  I think it was close to 200 pieces for $20 + shipping.

Have fun with trains...they are really useful engines!  LOL

  • We are looking for a train set right now too. She has a ton of Chuggington and Thomas trains.. we just need somewhere to put them all!
  • We have this one from Costco.  I felt the price was awesome for everything that you get!!

KidKraft? Metropolis Train & Table Set

We have been very happy with it.  We have had it for a year and a half.  Love the drawer, which is huge and holds a ton of extra track and accessories.  The only thing I didn't like was that there isn't much of an edge around the table, but it actually hasn't been an issue.  There is a huge play surface.  The printed side can be reversed to a solid espresso color side if you want to use it for a coffee table.  Kidkraft customer service is exceptional, if any of the track pieces have cracked or anything, you can go onto their website and reorder, with free shipping and no proof of purchase, and they will ship right to you.

The Kidkraft, Thomas, and Circo from Target track has all been compatible for us.

If you are interested in it and don't have a Costco membership, I'd be happy to order it for you.  We bought it in store at Christmas time, but it is 179.99 with free shipping online.

  • Santa brought DS the imaginarium set (table, all the track, accessories, trains, roundhouse) for Christmas.  All his Thomas stuff fits on it.  He loves it!
