BOMB check in

Hola ladies!  Doing well over here.  Looking forward to a busy week with graduation & Father's Day.  Today is my day off (thank God).

I kickboarded for 25 minutes yesterday!  I had the pool on campus all to myself and it was so peaceful and lovely out there.  I'm totally going to do it twice a week.  I kickboarded because I didn't have a cap and when I was swimming properly my hair was all in my face when I was breathing!  I need to get a swim cap.  But the kickboarding was fun and would save my hair a little bit, ha ha. I am WAY not a swimming so I thought that was a good start.

Here's my question today- I know it seems a bit dim- but WHY is whole wheat pasta better for you than regular?  I compared the nutritional values when I was buying it in the store last night and really it seems that it's the same.   If it's the same, um, the regular tastes SO much better.  I'd rather have less of the real thing than more of the yucky diet kind.  Same goes for things like sour cream, cheese, etc.

What do you think of "healthier" aka "diet" foods and would you rather have less of the real thing?

The one exception to this for me is ice cream.  I'm cool with a skinny cow or light ice cream dessert, because I don't have them all that often and I'm not fussy about the way they taste.

  • Whole grain is higher in fiber and therefore you need to eat less to full more full.  It is also lower on the glycemic index meaning it doesn't mess with your insulin level (very important while trying to lose weight).  It also supposedly contains more nutrients, but I haven't looked into that myself.  Maybe if you did part white and part whole wheat you could get the best of both worlds?

  • L hit the nail on the head. I have a book (by my sugar daddy, Dr. Oz) about how your body processes food. It does a really great job of describing the chemical processes that drive your digestive system and that trigger hunger. I think understanding how my body works helps me to feed it better.

Personally, I would rather go for less of the real thing vs. a lot of the fake thing. Some substitutes I don't mind - fat free milk or fat free cottage cheese. Others though just don't cut it for me. I'd rather have half a slice of real cheddar on my sandwich than a whole slice of fat free or low fat cheese.

Today is my first weigh-in since I rejoined WW. Wish me luck, ladies! I'll let you know how it goes. :)

  • Morning!

I did my second workout of New Rules of Lifting for Women (NROFLW) and I loved it. I followed that with 20 mins on the elipitcal.

Tomorrow I am going to swimming class and I am super excited!!

I agree with pp about whole wheat pasta. Lately, I rather have a little bit of the real stuff rather than the fake stuff. I still go with some of the lowfat (like milk and some cheeses) but they have additives to make it low fat, I am better off with the full fat version!

  • Just wanted to check in.  Doing ok with eating but need to push myself to get back in the gym.  I so lack motivation right now.  But we have been swimming nearly nightly!  Good luck at the weigh in Ash!
  • I feel a little stupid posting this. I got on the scale today and I'm 7lbs lighter from my surgery. I feel stupid because I was hoping that number was going to be higher. I was kind of hoping for 10lbs. I'm a bit bummed because I won't be able to workout for a while. I will say that all my weight training I did before was the best thing I could have done. I have a lot of muscle to be able to lift myself and do things I might not have been able to do other wise. For me I would rather eat less of the real stuff than lots of the fake. I can't eat or drink anything "diet" because the artificial sweeteners leave a horrible taste in my mouth.

  • I would also rather eat just less of the real thing. I'm trying to be better about not eating as much processed food and cutting down on portions is one of my biggest hurdles.

I've been doing better with drinking more water and trying to eat better like I said. We had been OOT for a few days plus whatever little bug the boys might have had kept me away from running. I'm ready to get back out there and just enjoy some time to sweat it out. :)

Anyone want to sign up for a race in the fall with me? ;)

It's only been a couple of weeks, right J? I bet you'll see more loss when you're not as swollen and your body isn't working so hard to heal itself. I'm watching your posts very closely because, at the end of this long weight loss journey, I know I'm going to need something for all this extra skin on my tummy. Either that or it's going to hang down to my knees.

  • Ugh, my eating has been terrible lately.  Not to mention the weekend away to Monterey was a complete pig out fest for me too... but i am happy to say yesterday was a *tiny* improvement and today is a little *tiny* bit more.

I also prefer to just have a little of the real stuff instead of lots of the alternative.  Or i find ways to spice up the alternative.

You ladies sound like you are all doing great

  • I am not a frequent poster (I read from my phone a lot but it is a PITA to reply using it), but I am hoping to get in on this BOMB action.  I have officially become big, fat mom.  I am not nursing any longer for a variety of reasons and am done having kids, so I need to get my ass in gear and not die of a heart attack before my kids are in kindergarten.  I am the heaviest I have ever been in my life (seriously, I weigh close to what my 6'4 husband does), and something's gotta give.

I am intrigued by WW but it seems expensive and a lot of work.  Do you guys do it online or go to meetings?

  • Had my weigh in this afternoon. I am down 3.8 on paper but I did a switch from shoes to bare feet which I think added a lb of loss. A 2lbs real loss is Awsome!! I also reached my 5% goal which is crazy! So far to go but things are comming along!

We've definitely had to do some searching in our budget to make sure it would work, but knowing that it's a program that works (I lost 50 lbs on it 5 years ago) made it easier to spend the money. As far as work goes, the first couple of weeks are the hardest because you're learning the system, but really, it's not that hard.

I do it both online and go to meetings. The e-tools are super helpful, but I need the support of a meeting. WW is like my version of AA. If you do the monthly pass, which is the cheapest per meeting price, then you get access to both.

  • I haven't been able to check in much, here or on the board in general, but here I am... I've had a good step forward and maybe a not so good step back. The good stuff - I joined the gym a while back and I finally went. I took advantage of the free session with a personal trainer and she completely kicked my butt and then I went in again yesterday and worked out on my own. The best part? G loves the drop-in daycare there. Both times he seemed sad I was taking him away and that makes me feel a million times better about leaving him while I take care of myself. :)

The setback - not so great diet. Definitely been indulging in some caramel macchiatos and some chocolate ice cream in the evenings. Things have been super stressful lately and I tend to give in to my cravings during the rough times. :(

  • I'm frustrated as he!! b/c I keep GAINING!  I'm working out like a mad woman and eating really well!  I don't know what the heck is going on, but it's lite a fire under me to wean N (he's 19 months) as well, b/c I think that may be part of the issue!

I leave for Vegas in ONE week and I need to be bikini ready and it's starting to really piss me off!

As far as diet/healthier foods, I've cut out almost anything processed, so I don't even see it anymore, but I was a fan of the whole grain pastas, and lighter sour creams....cheese I don't really look at, so I'm pretty sure we full fat.  My answer is useless Wink
