newly pregnant, recommend your obgyn/midwife

Hi! I am newly pregnant (like 6 weeks). I live in Newport and my obgyn is in Liberty Twp and delivers exclusively at Mercy Fairfield. I'm due in February and not too sure about a 45 minute drive that time of year. Due to this (and some other factors with my current obgyn), I am looking for a new one. I also like the idea of midwife but have not heard positive things about the TriHealth group.

Any suggestions/thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

  • I see Seven Hill's at West Chester but they have offices in Mt Auburn and Western Hills.  They deliver at The Christ Hospital and I have delivered in January and March there, it was a 45 min drive for me too.  They also have another group that some of the other ladies see that are more Midwife orientated I think.  At the practice I goto there is one Midwife.

  • I go to the Tri-Health Nurse Midwives and have been very pleased with my care both this time and last time-- I would highly recommend them. If I may ask, what negative things have you heard? If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me :-)

  • I see Graig Smith at Samaritan OB/GYN (in the doctor's building at Good Sam - they deliver at Good Sam).

There are 3 female doctors (Hoopes, Gardner, Choi) and one other male doctor (Schuermann) in the practice as well.  I've seen them all, they're all great.

  • I see Dr. Joseph Caligaris.  He has an office in the medical building at christ as well as an office in blue ash near kenwood mall.  I know he delivers at christ, but not sure about which other hospitals. Let me know if you would like any more info.

  • Thanks ladies. In regards to the TriHealth midwives, I've heard that they are not "minimal intervention" as compared to the traditional midwife philosophy.  This could be just the individual experiences of the friends I've spoken to about them.
  • I can agree that compared to a traditional midwifery experience the Trihealth CNM's do more intervention but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that they deliver at a hospital that has it's own protocol for some things (like being at least hep-locked). I found that in this area, aside from a home birth, they are as good as its going to get if you want midwifery style of care. I had some complications with my last pregnancy and was switched to a high risk dr half way through and requested the midwives do my delivery/induction-- they were REALLY accommodating for all my requests: let me eat and drink during labor, I labored in a birthing tub, didn't offer an epi, let me do the minimal amount of monitoring necessary (which is more with an induction vs. normal delivery), I was up walking around, using the birthing ball and laboring in any position I wanted and Kim was in my room with me off and on the entire labor (24+ hours) and she was by my side for the last 2.5 hours of my labor which I think is pretty unheard of as far as receiving that kind of attention from an OB.

I will say that there are some CNM's in the practice that will definitely be more for the minimal intervention and some that are more "medical" but overall I have been really happy with their care. GL with whatever you choose!

Same for me but I see Dr Hoopes as my primary.  Love them all!

  • I go to OBGYN Specialists of NKY and see Dr. Donnelly as my main physician. They have offices in Edgewood at St. Elizabeth (where they deliver) and Florence. I've been pleased with the care I've received there.

Same here too!  Smith is my primary, but I love them all!  Never had an issue there.

I love the Tri Health midwives. Totally agree with Lauren.

  • I know Samaritan OB/Gyn has tons of satisfied customers, but I had such a negative experience that I would never recommend them to anyone.  I'm sure everyone here is sick of hearing me say that, but I feel very strongly about it.  I truly wonder if I would have miscarried my DS if I had stayed with that practice.  My new doctor was appalled.  They also royally messed up the billing and didn't want to straighten it out since I was no longer a patient.  It took my insurance company fighting for me to get it straightened out months later.

Unfortunately, it sounds like my new doctor would be too far for you.  I hope you find a practice you like.  It is such a good feeling to know you're in good hands.

  • I see the MWs from the St E Physicians for Women and Nurse Midwives. (I think) They have a couple offices but they've moved around a couple times since I've been a patient due to the hospital mergers, etc... Right now I know they have an office in Florence at the hospital but I don't know where else, and they are delivering in Florence and I'm not sure when they will have privileges in Edgewood (I delivered at St. E in Fort Thomas when it was still St Luke).  I have had a good experience with them and plan to use them again when we get around to having #2.

  • Thanks so much for all the recommendations! I think I will check out TriHealth Midwives.
