My LO has been EBF and we started giving him 1-2 oz of homemade veggies per day last week at the advice of our Dr. Since then I've noticed a decrease in my milk supply on the days I work & pump (3 days/week). LO is already about 20 lbs so the Dr was really pushing to start solids now & he's eating well & likes it but I'm afraid about losing my milk supply. Usually I get ~4oz pumping but now I can barely get 3 oz & I'm wondering if this is enough for him... I was reading online that a BF baby should start solids around 6 months. Any advice from those of you who BF & started solids? did your supply decrease?
Re: 4 months starting solids too early for BF baby?
We waited until 4 1/2 months, but a lot of people wait until 6. If you feel like your milk is decreasing I would personally put off solids for a bit. When are you feeding him? Before he nurses or after?
At this point, I think solids are meant to be just for practice...kind of like dessert. I would nurse LO as you usually do and then offer some food 30-60 min after he BFs. And maybe cut back to 1 oz?
My little man at 0-1-2
Our ped said we could start rice cereal at 4 months but didn't really need to do it until 6 months and if he was interested. Solids at this age are really just for practice; LO should still be getting all his nutrition from BM, so like PP said, you'll want to nurse and then give solids.
This. Our Dr. also gave us the go ahead to start solids because DS was over 18lbs at his 4 mo appt. We waited until 4.5 mo and tried a little oatmeal and then I baked him a sweet potato and a few days later gave him a little avocado. He has had a bit of banana and a little acorn squash too. He doesnt seem that interested though so we backed off and just let him sit with us at the table. If he seems interested, we give him a little. I do have some of the previously mentioned items in the freezer for him if he needs it but I am not going to make up a bunch of food for him if he isnt into it.
No AF yet... I had thought that it could possibly be that.. Not looking forward to AF returning though.. Even if it's not that, it's not impossible to get my supply back up, right? I just tried to pump now & it was not that successful... =(
I thought I was running into a supply issue too after starting some rice cereal. I realized that my body has become very sensitive to if I am not drinking enough water or eating enough throughout the day. As soon as I started drinking a ton of water I noticed a huge difference. I also ordered some fenugreek in pill form and tea bags. here is a link if you want to read more about it : https://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/fenugreek.html
Good luck!
