Please recommend: best toys for 2 year old?

DS will be TWO next week!!! DH and I have gone shopping several times for his gifts, and always come home empty handed. I always question whether or not it would be a worthwhile purchase, or if it will just be another 'piece' taking up space in the playroom....We were thinking of a play kitchen and a wagon for his 'bigger' toys, and then just some books, puzzles, etc.

  • DS loves his kitchen!  He got it for Xmas.  For his b-day he got an art easel which he already loves and also got a bunch of sports stuff because he's obsessed - tee-ball set + glove, soccer goal.  The bubble mower has also been a hit.

  • My ds loves his kitchen ,we just got for his b-day a t- ball set, also got a golf set which he loves too.He loves bubbles ,what about a a water table for outside,we have a sand/water table, but i wish we would have just gotten a water table instead.
  • DS favorite toys rights now are his "bike" (the kind that you can push and then converts to a tricycle), his sand and water table (we just fill it with sand), his t-ball set, his golf set (both Little Tikes I think), and his bubble blower (like a leaf blower that shoots bubbles.  He also loves water toys.  We got this hose attachment that has lots of little hoses that shoot in different directions that he loves.  I will also admit that he is very into waterguns.  DH and I really do not like the idea of play guns, but he sees them at his cousins' house and he really loves to play with them.

DS loves his sister's play kitchen and wagon (2-seater).  He is also in love with matchbox cars (and similar ones).  He drags them around in a little bucket.  He is also into Elmo and DeeDah (what he calls cookie monster -- no idea how that started).  So for his bday, he is getting a train table we got off CL with some trains, a book or two, stuffed Lightening McQueen, stuffed animal Cookie Monster, a new Elmo's World DVD and some more matchbox cars.   FWIW, before his and his sister's birthdays, we are doing a massive toy clean-out and getting rid of a bunch of toys so there is room for more.  I already found where to donate used toys locally.

  • DD plays with her kitchen every single day. We are planning on getting her a sand and water table for her 2nd birthday which is right around the corner. We're also looking into those stupid Little Tykes plastic outdoor play sets, like the slides and the little houses and stuff. I hate them, but I know DD will like and use them.

In terms of small stuff, there is always bubbles, coloring books, accessories for her baby doll, clothes, books, DVDs (she is particularly into Calliou these days), etc.

  • DS has a Melissa and Doug barn with 100 animals (or so) and he plays with it everyday. He also plays with his car garage, kitchen set, slide and bike daily. GL!
