Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Bug spray

I was researching bug spray last night because we're taking C to the botanical gardens tonight for their free jazz concert/picnic.

I just think it's odd that sunscreen/block isn't really rec until after 6 months (we've been using CA baby on just exposed areas), but the chemicals in bug spray are okay after 2 months?  You would think the rec would be similar.

We're going to put Cutter: All Family on just her arms and maybe her feet area tonight to keep the mosquitoes away.

Re: Bug spray

  • i specifically asked pedi about this at our 6 month appt last week (because we have a lake house and bugs in the summer in Minnesota suck!).  he said do not use anything with deet in it.  he said it's preferable to just clothe LO appropriately - cover as much skin as possible.  the risky part is not only the absorbtion, but the fact that they put hands, feet, etc in their mouths.  good luck!

I wear one of those off things.  It seems to work really well

  • Someone on here once recommended All Terrain for Kids and I looked it up on some safety sites and found that it's highly rated as safe for babies.  I just ordered some BUT I wont start using it on DS until 6 months.

Check the link I added to my post. Apparently, anything 30% Deet or less is okay?  I'm not sure where they found their answers from.  It's listed under their "Expert Advice" at babycenter.com.

I believe it says it's according to the AAP and CDC so pretty reliable in that case.

  • I heard bounce dryer sheets work so I tested it out this past weekend when we went camping.  Worked great!  You can just keep it in your pocket, in the baby stroller, somewhere close.  No chemicals, no worry!  And you'll smell great :)

  • According to the OFF for kids (which has a deet concentation of 5%), it says NOT to use their bug spray on babies less than 6 months of age.

Any bounce dryer sheet or a particular scent? I want to test this out tomorrow when we go this lake tomorrow. The bugs are so bad right now!

  • My ped said dont bother with anything that doesn't have deet in it because it is not effective and you are just putting extra chemicals on the baby. He said use a family bug spray with a little deet, or what he recomends more, a mosquito net.
