VBAC

I think I'm going to ask about vbac

I'm so on the fence about even considering vbac. My first delivery was terrifying and ended in an emergency u/s because of failure to progress and decelerated fetal heart tones (in the 40's), small pelvis and a tilted uterus. At the time of my delivery the OB said I wouldn't be able to deliver vaginally. I'd really like to be up on my feet and moving around faster and all that. But terrified of another emergency c/s. At least if I plan it I'll feel like I have some control, you know?

Am I crazy for even considering it? I just want to weigh my options.

Re: I think I'm going to ask about vbac

  • I do not think you are crazy for considering it. I had a similar experience to yours. I had an emergency c/s after 27 hours of labor, 2 hours of pushing and DD never making it further then station +1 before she showed her hear ttones became a concern. The next day when I saw my OB she told me that I would be able to have a vaginal delivery. I was told that because I gained low amounts of weight (17) and DD was macrosomic (she weight 9 pounds 6 ounces) that it is likely that I will not be able to push a baby out ever!

My current (new) OB has agreed to let me VBAC if I want to. But still has concerns regarding my "big babies."  I have done a lot of looking around, talking to others and posting on this message board and have learned a few things from these ladies. CPD (small pelvis) is a rare condition. Your body will not make a bigger baby then it can deliver.

After learning that and coming to terms with everything I looked at a few things about my experience that may have caused my delivery difficulties and "big baby"

    1. My weight. Prepregnancy I weighed 202- at this time I weigh 165 and hope to lose about 30 more pounds before September when we TTC #2. If not that at least I am working on losing more before then.

    2. While my GD test came back negative it still does not mean that I did not have blood sugar problems last time. This time I will watch my eating more carefully. Stay away from "White Foods" eat more "Tree Bark" types of grains, limit soft fruits (if any at all), No Sugar (cake, candy, soda, etc) and limit my dairy during the last 6-8 weeks. Pretty much going to follow a GD type of diet. To make sure I remain super healthy.

    3. Walk everyday. I walked a lot with DD but probably not as much as should have.

    4. Going to go to see a chiropractor, before (will start in August) and during pregnancy to help get LO in a good position and make sure my pelvis is in proper alignment.

    5. Follow the information on the spinning babies website to get baby in optimal position.

    6. Last and most important- Prepare for a NATURAL (med free) Childbirth. Last time I was basically induced, waters broken and pit started. Epidural at 4 cm dialated thus being in bed the entire time not able to move. I plan on using the hypnobabies program to help with comfort as well as using water through the shower or a hot bath during labor. If I need pain meds I will try other things like shots, iv pain meds before the Epidural.

Lastly if I do end up needing a CBAC I will have a plan this time, to help the delivery take on the Natural Cesarean concept.

  • No, you're not crazy. Find another OB or two and see if they are more supportive. If you truly aren't a good VBAC candidate, ask what you can do to make your c/s experience better than last time. And if you are, you'll need a supportive care provider. My first labor was traumatic, and I flopped back and forth over what I should do with my second, but I had a great team that helped make sure I wouldn't go through hell again. If you can and want to VBAC, don't be shy with your OB. Talk about your fears and make sure the two of you are on the same page.
