Trouble TTC

Clomid and depression (P/SAIF welcome)

Lately I've been having a hard time and feeling really depressed.  Big surprise when it comes to IF, right? I figured part of it is because of the meds since I feel a bit better once I'm off the progesterone but someone recently mentioned to me that in all the medications she tried, she felt the most depressed while on Clomid.  I had figured since I didn't have mood swings while taking the pills I was free from the "Clomid Crazies" but this has me wondering.  Has any one had experience or insight into depression from Clomid?

Many of you probably don't remember me, but I did an intro a while back and then got busy at work and my home board so I haven't been around 3T much.  For a refresher DH and I have been TTC since May 2010 and are dealing with PCOS which has us working with a RE since December.  I'm just starting my 4th round of Clomid with TI (since DH's swimmers are great).  My "home board" (GP on the nest) has been a 3T difficult lately with a flood of BFPs more PG related posts than I can handle, so will you take me back and let me hang here?  I'll try to be better this time.

Re: Clomid and depression (P/SAIF welcome)

  • Im really sorry to hear that you're going through a rough time. Clomid can cause depression. Like you said, its hard to know if its the clomid or just the crappiness of IF. I have found that Im much more melancholy and easily slip into depression while on clomid. Hormones are very powerful, as is IF. Hang in there, it will get better! :)

Hello friend! I've been hanging here lately for the exact same reason. Join us (blueberries and bhead are here too)!

As for the clomid question, I know that femara is a brain-altering med that can cause depression and anxiety in those prone to it (like me, yay *sarcasm*), but since clomid works differently, I'm not sure it has the same problem. Hopefully someone else here can tell you more. ((hugs))

  • I don't have any insight and don't recall being told that depression and Clomid are linked. However, if it is, I'm sure it's in the pile of paperwork I have from the RE and pharmacist. I do know that Clomid sends messages to the brain, which then sends messages to your ovaries so I could see how this could be possible. Also, anytime we mess with our hormones, then depression can for sure take hold. I would definitely talk to your RE next time you see him/her about this as there might be alternatives. For example, FSH injects, while more costly and invasive directly stimulate your ovaries so maybe they don't cause depression? (I don't really know, I'm just throwing out ideas here) I'm so sorry about this, IF is a cruel road to have to take ((hugs))

Heelllooo!  I've seen you, blueberries, and bhead around here.  Glad to know I'm not the only one that's having hard time adjusting to the turn GP has had recently.

Thanks for your input.  I too am slightly prone to depression and anxiety and have had treatment for it in the past.  Maybe I'll bring it up the next time I'm at the RE...or better yet round 4 could just be the last one.
