34w Growth Scan - Can I get your thoughts?

I went in for my 34w growth scan yesterday.  My babies have always been measuring big but I found out yesterday that they are really big:

Baby A (girl): 5lbs 5oz, which I guess is the 75th percentile and actually measuring 35w instead of 34

Baby B (boy): 6lbs 1 oz which is the 95th percentile and he's measuring 36w instead of 34

I know u/s measurements are usually off and nothing is completely accurate. I told the doctor I was concerned about the size of Baby B since I'd always heard there is conern is babies are measuring below 10th or over 90th percentiles but he said since both babies are measure so big, its not a concern.

I also expressed my concern knowing that I have 4 weeks to go until scheduled c/s and without coming right out and saying it, he said I will likely go into labor on my own before then within the next 2 weeks.

I know there are concerns about their lung development if they are born too early, is that always the case, even if they were born a decent size?

Sorry this is long, I'm freaking out and scared and DH thought it was our best appointment because he is so excited to meet these babies.

Any thoughts?

Re: 34w Growth Scan - Can I get your thoughts?

  • Wow! What were they at your last growth scan? I am jealous, I am hoping my girls are 5lbs at my 34 week. They will be okay if they come earlier than 38, my OB is saying the same thing. Best of luck!

  • I wouldn't worry too much...especially since your doc isn't concerned.

FWIW my girls were measuring 7 lb. 14 oz. and 7 lbs. 15 oz. at my 35 week u/s and the were born a week later weight 6.13 and 7.1 ~ so the u/s was definitly off a pound...

GL!  you are definitly in the home stretch!  And unless you are dialted and/or experiencing contractions already I'd say you have the same chance of making it to your scheduled c/s as you do going into labor within the next 2 weeks...

  • oh gosh. If they are measuring consistently big then you just have big babies. If this is a freakish growth then disregard it. They thought my babies were IUGR (growth disorder) and induced me at 38.5 weeks and both were over 6 pounds. All of that worry for nothing. When you have two in there it is nearly impossible for ultrasounds to be accurate. For some people it is, but for most of us, the techs are doing the best with what they can.

As for delivering early. 36 weeks would still be great. I had the betamethasone shots (steriods for lungs) when I went into PTL at 31 weeks so I wasn't concerned if they came early. But most 36 weekers that are a good size really have no issues!

Congrats on making it so far mama!

My last growth scan was at 30w and they were the following:

    Baby A:  3lbs 7oz putting at the 65th percentile

Baby B: 3lbs 12 oz which put him in the 86th percentile

  • Unfortunately, size of the babies has nothing to do with lung development except that it may indiciate that the dates were off and they are actually older than you thought. So if your babies are really 34 weeks (and the dates aren't off) and 6-ish pounds they will still need the extra help that say a 4-ish pound 34 weeker would need. Luckily, you have made it this far and at 35-36 weeks most babies don't need much assistance after birth except a little help learning how to feed effectively, especially if you plan on BF. Did they say what your cervix is doing? Some women are made to carry 12 plus pounds of babies so I wonder what led your doctor to believe you would deliver in the next 2 weeks?

You've done good mama and grown some big, healthy babies! Take it easy, drink tons of water and hopefully they stay in a few more weeks!

This is the first time I have seen that pic of your lo's....oh my god that is so precious!!!!

  • All my babies measured big (all three) and because DS1 was so big when he was born (10lbs 12oz) everyone thought for sure I couldn't carry the twins to term. Well, I did and they measured big all along too. DD came out at 6lbs 11oz and DS2 was 6lbs 5oz. Too me they were soooo tiny (since DS1 was so big) but they actually were just right!

GL - and try to not worry about it, just keep em cooking!

That's only a little bigger than my girls were (29w5d A was 3lb2oz and B was 3lb1oz). But mine are sharing a placenta and they said their rate of growth will likely slow down. It could be an overestimate, I imagine it is difficult to get an accurate estimate with everything squished in there. Either way, you did great getting them to 34 weeks and every day that goes by that they are in is good for them. You've gotten by most of the major milestones though so they might need a little help if they came now but a lot of times it is latching and feeding. Good job mama :)

  • Those are awesome sizes!  My boys were born at 34 weeks and their lungs were perfect....they didnt need oxygen or anything.  I guess there is always a chance, but I'd say they will do great!  Your body will get to the point where it just cant be prego anymore, which is why I think I went into labor at 34 weeks.  He may be right (or may not be) about you going into labor in the next 2 weeks.  Just be ready to go!

Also, my boys were small when they were born 4lbs 4 oz and 4 lbs. 10 oz.  Good luck!  I would just try to not worry about it and focus on keeping those babies in as long as possible!  You and they will do great!

  • at my last scan, 33w3d my babies were 5lbs 1oz and 5lbs 4oz.  I think it's the 71st percentile or something.  My doc never mentioned anything, they just said everything was looking good.

Thanks! They are so sweet with each other. I sat them down and they grabbed hands and just held on through all of my maniac picture taking. So fun.

  • I had a growth scan three days before my girls were born.

    Baby A Predicted: 6 lbs 5 oz Baby A Actual: 5 lbs 9 oz

    Baby B Predicted: 6 lbs 10 oz Baby B Actual: 6 pounds 3 oz

So the weight estimates can be off by quite a bit. If your cervix is holding strong I don't see why you couldn't make it to your scheduled due date. My girls were born at 36 weeks 6 days and their only problem was a little jaundice. Good luck!
