Prilosec vs Prevacid

Anyone have experience with both of these?

GI doc changed us from Pepcid to Prevacid today, but when I got to the pharmacy APPARENTLY my LOVELY insurance company won't cover prevacid- only prilosec.

Waiting on the ok from the doctor at this point.

Re: Prilosec vs Prevacid

  • Can you get an insurance exemption?  DS was on prilosec and the GI wanted him on prevacid so the GI's office had to fill out some form asking for an expemption.  It took five days and multiple phone calls, but we got it.  According to the GI doctor they are both the same, but as with all drugs sometimes one drug works for one person and not another.  GL!

  • If you dont mind me asking, how much was the prevacid without insurance? this is what DD is on and we are still working on the samples so I have no idea at this point if it is covered!
  • prevacid, com has a copay waiver program that might be able to help. and you may need an appeal from the dr to get coverage.

    good luck!

  • McInstar.. Not sure. I'm sure it was way expensive, though, since it's formulary.

I know just my formulary pepcid was ~130 dollars w/o insurance.

lstaylor- I'll keep that in mind if we can get it improved. I think my formulary co-pay is 40 bucks..
