Persistent Thrush - HELP!

My little guy and I have had thrush for almost 2 weeks now. He is on Nystatin oral drops and I've got the cream for my nipples. I've been trying to avoid yeast and sugar. I've been rinsing my nipples with vinegar/water after feedings, sanitizing his soother every night, eating more yogurt and airing out my nipples(to my husband's delight).

So my problem is, it's not going away! I'm going to pick up a refill of his Nystatin and try Monistat for my nipples but I'm sort of at a loss to what else I can do. I will try and find the Acidophilus at the drug store while I'm there, as I know that can help too.

Anyone else go through this? What else can I do?!

Re: Persistent Thrush - HELP!

  • When DD#1 had thrush we did Nystatin for 3 weeks and it would not go away.  My doctor suggested Gentian Violet (1%.)  Within just a couple of days it was completely gone.

DD#2 has thrush right now (same age DD#1 had it) and we just went straight to the genetian violet instead of nystatin.  It has been 1 day and the thrush is already almost completely gone.

My advice, put him in a onesie you don't care about, then put a bib on him that you don't care about.  Use a Q-tip and put it on the thrush areas.  It is messy, and will stain anything it touches, but it works!

Also, continue to boil nipples for bottles, pacifiers, and keep doing the other things like yogurt, etc.

ETA: You can get it over the counter at drug stores.  I got ours from the wal-mart pharmacy.

  • I'm going through the same thing! I just started to EBF weeks ago when it started so I didn't have to boil everything all the time. DD doesn't take a paci or anything, so that wasn't a big deal. I'm on a prescription for myself and DD is taking Nystatin. I had burning of my breast so my thrush was pretty much set in. I've taken it for several days and the burning has stopped. My nipple is starting to look more normal and not "lighter". My prescription is for 10 days.

  • Ask your doctor for a prescription for all-purpose nipple ointment. It's amazing.

I can't make it clicky on my phone, but here's more about it: https://www.pregnancy.org/article/all-purpose-nipple-ointment-apno

  • Thanks ladies! I am going to see if I can get Gentian Violet over the counter here in Canada, not sure if its the same here and in the States. On my month board it was suggested I try grapefruit seed extract as well so hopefully I can find everything I need at one drugstore and see some results. Thanks again Smile

Another thought.  Does she have a diaper rash that may look Candidal?  If so, you may want to treat with Nyastatin down below.  It won't completely eradicate unless you treat every place.

    No diaper rash, thank goodness.

I did go get some Gentian Violet this afternoon and started the treatment, as well as acidophilus pills. I'll be getting some Grapefruit seed extract tomorrow (have to go to a specialized store and didn't get a chance today). Hopefully this all clears up quickly, my nipples are Sore!

  • if your LO takes a pacifier make sure to steralize after EVERY use, meaning if he uses on to take a nap do not use the same paci when he wakes up. The thrush lives on that stuff for a while unless you steralize. Same goes for all your bottle nipples and pump parts if you are pumping as well.
