Cluster feeding middle of the night?

Everything I read says it's typically in the evenings that newborns will cluster feed (i do realize that doesn't mean always). My LO is wanting to eat non-stop and is wide awake for 3 hours in the middle of the night, instead...from 2am-5am or 4am-7am. It's exhausting. I feel like it wouldn't be so bad if it were in the evening, then I could get a stretch of sleep afterwards, but instead, his longer stretch of sleep is in the early morning hours (this morning, he slept from 7:00 til 10:30, which is a lot for him..I normally won't let him go 4 hours between feedings, but he was obviously content and full).

Anyone else finding that their LO cluster feeds in the middle of the night? How do you cope (besides napping when possible, which I'm doing).

I think the evening cluster feeding usually doesn't start up until after they have their days and nights sorted out. Mine started doing it around 3 weeks, right after his 3 week growth spurt. Before then he had some non-stop, wide awake things in the middle of the night, too.

  • I would try to encourage LO to eat every 2-3hrs during the day, but make sure it's calm and quiet. Some babies feed at night because they can 'focus' on nursing because daytime nursing is too 'busy' for them/mom.

Baby may just be needing comfort and is nursing for that as well at night. I'm sure it's a lot more fun to snuggle and nurse with mom than sleep Wink
