Food Allergy

Anyone ever heard of this?

An allergy to tylenol/grape tylenol? DD started getting hives about the same time she started teething, which is when we started using tylenol. We kept thinking it was soap or something I was eating and, later, something she was eating. It never even occured to us that it could be the tylenol. We finally realized that the teething and hives came together and we eliminated the tylenol. She's been hive free for a little over a week. I've never heard of anything like it before though.

  • I learned that anything is possible and a child can be allergic to practically ANYTHING.  Your LO might be allergic to some ingredient or even the food coloring.  Food coloring allergy is pretty common (not as common as the top 8, but i see it pop up here and there) I would totally call your pedi just in case he needs to be medicated so doctors know what to avoid. • It's also possible she's reacting to the corn products in the Tylenol - does she tolerate other corn products okay?

Is she getting hives all over, or just around the mouth and butt?  If it's the latter, that could be a normal teething rash...

  • My dd reacted to something added to liquid prednisone, so it is possible.  My pedallergist was also very cautious with us giving Ibuprofen because of possible reaction.
  • The grape would probably have Red 40 dye.  This is a possible food allergy.

  • My DD is allergic to dyes. We suspected she was reacting to them so we totally removed dyes from our diets along with a lot of other things too. At Christmas, someone at her school gave her a snowball and omg it was horrible. She had a major skin reaction, horrid behavior and screamed/screeched for four days. I thought we were all going to loose our minds. Thankfully dyes are easy to avoid by eating healthy. I recommend checking out feingold.com.

Yep, it's most likely this (but it could be other things). The dye is definitely the most likely culprit. Try a dye free version next time and see if that one doesn't cause a reaction.
