Please help! re: latch

I'm desperte guys - I cannot for the life of me get my little bugger to open his mouth wide enough for a good latch except when he is screaming and then his tongue is in the way.  Any tricks?  I've tried rubbing my nipple on his lip, stroking his cheek/jaw, etc.  It just doesn't work.  Thank you!

(P&R cause I'm desperate for a nap!)

  • I have no advice aside from just shoving your boob in while he's screaming.  I know I read someone saying their LC recommended opening your mouth at LO-that they'll eventually mimic you, but never had to try.  GL.

  • That's all I could do in the beginning too. As long as he does latch, don't worry about it so much. It does get better! And by week 6 you feel like a pro. If you are having trouble latching (at all, not just good) call a lactation consultant. Your hospital probably has a nurse that can help.

First of all I'm so happy for you Congrats!!! I remember you from the TTC boards and was wondering what happened. You are doing everything I tried, eventually he will latch, I promise. My LO was lazy at latching but finally caught on. Sometimes you have to be quick with it. As soon as he opens his mouth just shove him on. Good luck!

  • My LC showed me how to hold my LO's lower lip out to help open her latch since she would initally latch well, but then slip down to a crappy latch. It helped. I also tell her "big bite" when she comes in for a latch and she's learned that means to open her mouth wider or mommy won't let her eat. It's also help with the bottle/breast switching since I can also tell her "big bite" with the bottle. I'm not sure what this will mean when we get to solids in a few months, but it's working for me right now!
  • I nudge her chin down with my finger. Basically, I just push it down as she is latching.

  • omgosh! if you figure this part out..please let me know!! i'm having the same EXACT problem. i'm pumping now and trying each time before a bottle of breast milk to get her to latch with no luck. after really pissing her off, i eventually cave and give her the pumped milk. :( i'm going to see the lc again tomorrow - hopefully i'll learn something worth sharing....keep posting though if you figure something out!
