if your child has a peanut allergy

how did you know? I hadn't given dd peanut butter yet but the other day I was holding her while I had the peanut butter out and she stuck her finger in and licked it.  She had just the smallest amount so I didn't really think too much of it.  Shortly after her one eye was very red and irritated. The sitter told me both eyes got red and she was sneezing alot.

 Is this a common reaction for children with a peanut allergy?

    I am not sure what is "common."  Any type of reaction can occur.  The first time they are exposed to it, the reaction can be very different than the next time.  It will usually be a more severe reaction the second time.

    I found out by testing for the top 8 when she was 3 months old.  We were originally there to test for a dairy allergy.

    My oldest DD had a peanut butter sandwich and a short while later Natalie's eye swelled.    I didn't know for sure what caused her eye to swell, though.

    So, after speaking with her pediatric nutrionist, the nutrionist suggested that if I was worried about possible peanut allergy, I could spread a small amount on the side of her mouth to check for reaction.  Sure enough, she broke out in hives within seconds.

    we found out after he was tested due to an ana reaction to eggs. red eyes could totally be a reaction. i would avoid until you do a scratch/pricking test.

    If I were you, I would make an appt with an allergist and avoid peanut unit you know for sure.
    DD~6 years old~born June 6, 2008 (1st grade)

    Sounds like an allergy to me. I gave DD peanut butter at 18 months since not a soul in my family or DH's has food allergies. She broke out in hives, her mouth itched, and her eyes got red. I'd go see an allergist and then you can know for sure.

    I would definitely avoid peanuts and see an allergist.  DD's reactions were much more severe so there was no question that she was allergic.  Children's reactions can vary substantially though so if you gave her peanuts again she might have a very different/more severe reaction.  

    Sorry you're dealing with this.  Good luck with the dr.
