(Sort of XP from my local board).
We had no idea my DD (20 months) was allergic to anything, but last night she had a reaction to peanuts. She has
had stuff with nuts in it without a problem, or at least not a
noticeable reaction. I search long and hard for snacks that are safe
for the kids at preschool because of nut allergies, but we never thought
twice about that at home and the kids have always had them.
Anyway my DD didn't even eat any peanut butter - thank heaven - it literally touched her mouth and the tip of her tongue, and then she started being agitated, her lips swelled up SO MUCH. It was really scary. We didn't wait to see if it would turn into anything worse, especially since breathing issues can happen hours later.
We raced to the ER and they took us right away, took her vitals. It was after 9 (she goes to bed at 10), so she was not happy (miserable + tired). Her lips/face was so big, she was so miserable and couldn't drink from her bottle (she takes a bottle for bed).
I thought they'd give her a shot, but they made us give her 3 meds (like in juice/bottle/syringe), including a steroid, benadryl, and something else. After taking the steroids alone, her lips went down pretty quickly. Total relief.
Although it was a horrible experience, I am so thankful it was 'ideal' - my husband was home - it was late at night - no traffic (25 minute drive in perfect traffic, so I can't imagine rush hour) - the ER took us quickly - she didn't reach a point where she had difficulty breathing. I mean we could have been hiking or out of town or anywhere.
DD managed to fall asleep around 11pm at the hospital and we stayed til 1:30 for observation, she's fine now. Now I have to take her to the Dr to be evaluated and have tests, we have an epi pen and a lot to learn. DD has bad eczema so I thought she might have food allergies/sensitivities but I had no idea it would be like this. I would be interested to hear how you guys learned that your kids had a nut allergy (trip to the ER, vs. less severe symptoms). I'm sure I'll be on this board with lots more questions!
BTW my 4 year old has no allergies.
Re: Intro w/story
Two of my three have food allergies. DS#2 ate biscotti that had pistachio in it when he was 2ish. He grabbed it off the table and took a bite - he had not eaten any nuts prior to that.
About half an hour later his eye swelled shut. Luckily Benadryl took care of it but we had him tested and found out he's allergic to tree nuts and kiwi (he had thrown up after eating kiwi previously).
DS#3 was breaking out in hives as soon as I started introducting formula. He was BF but I sent formula to DC when I didn't have enough pumped milk to send. It took a few weeks to figure out that he couldn't tolerate milk but we switched to a hypo-allergenic formula and he did fine. Fast forward to six months when we started introducing solids. He had reactions to things I couldn't identify. That's when we had him tested. He is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts and sesame. He's never had nuts of any kind but he broke out in hives twice when I kissed him goodbye after eating peanut butter myself.
We've had to use the epi-pen once when DS#3 drank his brother's cow's milk (he was 18 months old at the time). That incident was actually my fault because cow's milk went into a cup that was usually reserved for DS#3. Poor baby drank it because I gave it to him.
My twins are 5! My baby is 3!
DS#2 - Allergic to Cashew, Pistachio, Kiwi
DS#3 - Allergic to Milk, Egg, Peanut, Tree Nuts and Sesame
DS1 has no allergies that I know of. DS2 has an allergy (epi-pen worthy) to nuts (his testing was whacked out so we are just nut free for him) and to egg whites and egg yolks (although he seems to be able to handle eggs cooked in stuff just fine).
Our story: Afternoon snack time and I put just a tiny smear of PB on a saltine cracker. Gave it to DS2. He gagged and coughed up a little bite that he had taken and his face was getting red. His lips swelled up big time and he was a crying mess (I almost was!). I called the pedi (which is 45min drive away) and they said to give him Children's Benadryl and to take him to the ER if breathing issues started. No Children's Benadryl in the house (THANK GOD my dad was at the house with me) so I left my boys with my dad while I found the benadryl in a local grocery store (I was living in a small town at the time while my DH was deployed). I did tell my dad that if any breathing issues happened to take the boys to the ER (I drove my dad's car to find the benadryl so he would have the car seats). Thankfully, the benadryl worked. We had a well baby appt the following day with the pedi so I took pictures of DS2's face to the appt, we got a Rx for an epi-pen Jr, and an order for RAST testing. The RAST testing for the nuts was all sorts of F'd up and is another story. Once we moved back to where I am now, I took him to the allergist who did the scratch test and he tested positively to peanuts (only nut tested), egg whites, and egg yolks, The scratch test supported the results of the RAST testing.
Hi and welcome. sorry to hear about the allergy -allergies suck! but thankfully your LO is okay and didn't get any worse. The story is scary!
We found out when my son touched a piece of egg and went into a full ana reaction. His breathing was stopping on the way to the hospital and i just remember screaming at him to open his eyes and start breathing normally. ( I almost slapped him.. like in the movies when you slap someone to come out of what ever is happening).. thankfully the hospital was only about 7 mins away and my DH did about 90mph (which we got yelled at at the hospital for not calling 911 instead) and thankfully my DH was with me! i honestly don't think my son would have made it otherwise. The hospital admitted us right away and i was kicked out b/c i couldn't control my emotions.. not cool but probably better for my son.
shortly after we had a pricking test for the top 8 and it showed he's allergic to milk/eggs/peanuts -that was a shock! no one in my or my DH's fam have food allergies but it did explain his crazy eczema and swollen eyes through out the first 8 months. Once i introduced soy, he started reacting to that as well and on his second test -it showed that he's allergic to soy also.
so that's my story and i'm pregnant again so i come prepared!
