Two Under 2

The double stroller debate... (clicky)

I didn't want a double because DD hated the stroller as an infant and I figured I could wear DS.  Now we're finding we're using 2 strollers most of the time.  We both work, so we're not out alone with them much. Though that is changing as DS is getting older and more reasonable.

How long does a child really use a stroller?  DH seems to think our 2 year old will be wizzing around on a scooter or tricycle next year.  I think it'll be very useful for taking them on trips (Disney, State Fair, etc.), but spending $$ isn't really worth it for just a few trips here and there.

Anyway, tell me what to do!  We're looking at the 2010 City Mini Double since it is such a good price right now!

  • If you don't have much need for a double stroller and it's something that would be used seldomly, I'd get one used off of craigslist.

  • It just depends on your lifestyle and what you do with the kids. One of my favorite ways to get out of the house and get a little exercise is to take them on a long walk around the neighborhood. We do this just about every day and I love my double stroller (Indie Twin) for this purpose.

We also have a Sit n Stand for going places like the Zoo because a double jogger is so huge and cumbersome. FWIW, my older son is almost 3 and after going through a short phase of resisting the stroller, he's back to being fine with it.

    This is what we did!

  • We're going to get a wagon to start with and then see if we need a double.  I think the wagon sounds like fun and I'm not excited about adding a double stroller to our currently three stroller household.  Pretty much every Mom I know with two young kids does say they're needed though so I'm being realistic and also keeping an eye on craigslist.

My original plan was a wagon too, but they're also kind of $$ (for the ones with seats and a canopy) and they are kind of hard to push/pull.

We have a wagon, and I don't think it's really a substitute for a double stroller.  You can't take it everywhere you can take a double, and it's easier for a toddler to get out of.  DD1 has figured out how to unbuckle herself and likes to stand up in the wagon.  We stop when she does this, so walks take a long time and we don't get anywhere.  That said, if you only need a two-child conveyance for walks around the neighborhood, it might be ok.

I've gone back and forth so many times on whether or not we should get one. I'm thinking we'll just get an inexpensive Graco double stroller- nothing fancy. The reason being, I plan on SAH after this LO is born...and I have a feeling walks may become a daily thing once I'm recovered from my c/s. (For my own sanity!)

This is the one we'll probably get: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3692932

We have the single stroller/travel system that matches...and we love it.

  • My daughter will be 2 in a few weeks and she still uses a stroller a lot.  To be honest, when I'm out with both of them alone (which is every time), I always use SOME kind of stroller.  Either DD in the single stroller and DS in the Ergo. Or DD and DS in a double stroller.  I never just let DD run loose while I am carrying DS.  Too dangerous because toddlers are known to throw tantrums and I can't carry them both at the same time (DD is 26ish pounds, DS is 22ish).  I tried once (to carry DS and have DD hold my hand for an errand) and it ended VERY badly.  Had the staff not been super helpful I have no idea what I would have done.  Not my most shining parenting moment :).

I have two double strollers (BOB and BJCS) and use them both all the time.  My daughter has just always known that when she goes into her stroller or carseat that it is time to relax.  Only rarely has she ever fought me.
