Success after IF

If you've done an non-sedated egg retrieval please come in....

There's a chance I may be doing a non-sedated egg retrieval.

All 3 of mine (2 donor, 1 for us) have been either spinal or knocked out.

I'm a bit nervous about doing it without sedation.... can you share your experience?

She said they won't sedate because it's only 1 egg.  In my mind... pain is pain if it's 1 time or a dozen, KIWM?

Did it hurt?  Can you explain how it felt?

(and if you're wondering my BFF works at a local clinic who's looking for women over 40 willing to part with 1 egg (non-medicated cycle) for research on egg quality over 40)

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

Re: If you've done an non-sedated egg retrieval please come in....

  • I can't imagine it would feel good whether they were retrieving 1 or 100 eggs.  Yikes!  Maybe I'm just a wuss, but that sounds painful. Would they at least numb you or give you some good drugs?

I thought you were getting ready to tell us you were going to do IVF.  I think it's awesome you are taking part in the research study though.  Is the research for egg quality in general or is this for infertility research?

You'll have to keep us posted on everything!

  • I have a friend who did it because the couldn't get the needle in =( She said it was soooo hard, but she made it and now has a set of beautiful twins. I can tell her to come over here.

  • Not sure what you mean by non-sedated. No meds at all? Or not knocked out? I had twilight for both of mine, but twilight doesn't really work on me (I have a really high tolerance to meds/chemicals in general, caffeine has zero effect on me even in high doses, pain meds are worthless, etc.). So even though I had the normal amount of twilight sedation that renders others pretty much "out", I was aware/conscious during the entire procedure, albeit groggy and loopy. It didn't hurt, but I could definitely feel them "futzing around" down there and hear the RE instructing nurses, etc. and remember the procedures. It wasn't at all painful or traumatic. If you mean zero meds altogether, then no experience there, but I'd imagine if it was truly traumatic or painful they wouldn't do it, you know?

It's one of the top IF clinics in the country.  They pioneered ICSI and have a R&D portion to their practice.

I asked my BFF why they'd want my eggs when they're obviously cr@ppy but she said they're wanting to look at a new way of attempting to determine egg quality that may make PGD unnecessary in some cases.

Their objective is to figure out if a protein released by the egg can indicate quality issues to they don't have to physically touch the egg for testing like they have to with PGD.  Obviously it won't remove the need for PGD in all cases but it could help quite a bit if they had an extra indicator letting them know what eggs are the best of the bunch post- retrieval, KWIM?

I think they specifically WANT sucky eggs.  If so... I'm their gal!

    Interesting stuff!

    YIKES!!!

Well.... I'm gonna need more info.  I'm sure they'll give it to me at my CD 3 draw.

I figure if nothing else they WILL give me some valium, right?

I'm not a fan of pain.

  • I did non-medicated for my first IVF, I was just given something to relax me.

It wasn't too painful on my right side, but my left ovary is behind my bladder and it hurt like a mother f'er when they retrieved those eggs.

It was not a fun experience but I survived.   Child birth hurt worse.

    LMAO.... I've never given birth!!

I can suck this up for the few short minutes it will take if it'll maybe help them get another IF lady knocked up some day, right?

    I can do this.

    It'll be over quick.

  • I was given the twilight sedation, but it had no effect other than making me feel nauseous and loopy. I was fully aware and felt everything. I won't lie, it hurt really bad, but I think they were attempting to retrieve 20 eggs. Hopefully the process for one would be really quick so you wouldn't be in pain for too long! Good luck!

  • I did get valium and I think a shot of novacaine in my hoo-ha, so I'd ask about that.  Its definitely do-able and if its just one egg, it should be quick.  I think my pain was more b/c they had such a hard time getting to the ovary.  Once it was over, I was just sore but I was sore after the second IVF when they actually knocked me out.

  • Oops, double posted.
  • I had an ovarian cyst aspirated without meds, which I think would be the same. I'd put it on an uncomfortable, but not extremely painful scale. Maybe a 6/10 pain scale. Bet it would be over quick, but you might want to ask them for a mild pain med first. I've had waxes and laser hair removal that were worse.

OK... THAT's a bench mark I can relate to.

So if I can stomach a brazillian wax I can do this, right?

Sadly there won't be any fun naked coochie nookie to look foward to to help steel my resolve.

     I really can do this.

And how cool would it be if they really can determine some info about egg quality based on what they learn from this study?

Definitely! If it were more than one or two I'd say you want the good stuff, but one will be NBD. Such a cool thing you're able to do this. Hope they get some good info. about our elderly eggs ;-)
  • I've done two non-medicated - but when I say non-medicated I did have some pain killers beforehand, but wasn't knocked out or anything.  The first one wasn't too bad, but the second one I wouldn't wish on anyone!  Some of my eggs hadn't released yet so they basically scraped them off the lining and that was.not.fun.  However, for one you can definitely stand it!  You'll be fine!  Not that I would recommend signing up for this weekly or anything, but it's over fast!

    Good luck!

  • I would do an unmedicated childbirth in a heartbeat (and I have) but I am not sure I would do an unmedicated ER.  Nope- no way.  I sure hope they give you something.  I can do pain that is natural to the human body but when you start talking about doing something like sticking in a needle in my hoo-ha, you better give me something.  Ask for something mild but please ask for something.

And btw- very cool of you to be a part of this!  I did an ovulation study in college and I thought it was so cool that I was doing something that helped IF women.  Never would I have imagined at that time that I would be one of those women.

  • I had twilight sedation for my first two retrievals, however I started coming out of it in both of them. Let me tell you, it was very painful. Much worse than any bikini wax I've ever had. I'd never willingly do it for research. Maybe if I HAD to in order to achieve pregnancy, but NEVER willingly.
