Success after IF

Potty Training question- which is better?

Get him one of those seats that fit over the toilet.  Or get him a portable one?

Any recommendations for either kind?  I don't know when I'll potty train him yet.  Was thinking maybe some time in the next few months- but I'm in no rush.  Just wanted ideas to file in the back of my head.

  • We got both.  The portable ones are left unused.  The seat one isnt used anymore either.  My boys were much more into standing to pee like daddy.  We by far get the most use out of our step stool.

  • In the beginning the small portable ones ( had about 4 of them) he can independantly use these with help but needs help w/the seat. We got the portable ones for $.99 at IKEA and he uses them more often ( now there are just 1 in each bathroom) and we keep one in the car.

  • We use the ones that go on the toilet seat more.  All of a sudden he's more into standing and really making a mess.  The "point it down" technique doesn't always work...lol.

  • We did the portable one.  We left it in the family room at first (weird I know but it really helped them to remember to go potty).  Then once they mastered that we moved on to the potty ring (didn't use it very long bc they liked the big potty better).  GL sweetie, don't rush it but for sure make an effort to introduce it!!!

  • We started portable so we could keep the potty close to the child instead of making them get to a toilet.

I recommend the baby bjorn travel potty because it's got a super high front that's almost impossible to pee out of.

You'll want to move to a potty topper as soon as possible simply because it's gross to clean out the portable ones.

I HIGHLY recommend investing in the type that's built into a regular toilet seat.  Ours is brand: Bemis

It's more expensive but with 2 kids to train we've gotten a TON of use out of ours and have zero regrets.  When we used a topper the pee would get down under it and leave a rim of urine on the toilet seat.  I was constantly cleaning it up and the penis blockers just got down right disgusting.  Plus there's the issue of where to put it when it's not in use.  We had one that hung on the side of the toilet tank but again... disgusting - even when it's clean.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • thanks!
