Can I have tea?

Hi everyone,

I have developed the same cold as my coworkers as of yesterday and I have a terrible sore throat, etc. In my pre-pregnancy days I would have tea (I was never a big medicine person thankfully to begin with) but now I have read in a few different places that I cannot have tea. Has anyone ever been sick when pregnant? What can you take to relieve a sore throat? Is my tea and honey still safe?

 Thank you!

I feel like everyday I have new questions and concerns:)

Re: Can I have tea?

  • I drank tea fairly often when I was pregnant.  I made sure it was caffeine free.  I would just avoid any herbal tea and stick to a black or rooibos.

I think honey is safe, but someone who has been pregnant more recently can confirm that.

  • I drank regular decaf tea throughout my entire pregnancy.  I'm not sure about the honey.
  • Some teas contain herbs that you shouldn't have, but if they do then they usually say on the bag or box that it shouldn't be used by pregnant/breast feeding women.

  • You can definitely have tea. If you want to be extra safe, you can drink a tea geared toward pregnant women (like red raspberry leaf tea).

  • Regarding honey, you are supposed to make sure your honey is pasteurized (ie. not raw).  I think most honey is pasteurized unless it is labeled as raw.  Agave Nectar is a good substitute as well.
  • Early in my pregnancy, I had a serious craving for sweet tea.  When I asked my doctor, she suggested that I go with decaff and I could drink as much as I wanted.  I would just look at the ingredients.

Re honey and PP - raw honey is pretty hard to find.  (At least I couldn't find any when I was looking pre-pregnancy.)  Even the honey I bought at the farmer's market that still has the honeycomb inside has been pasteurized.  So you're probably safe on that front so long as it doesn't specifically say raw.

  • According to my OB, most "mass market" herbal tea is fine.  She didn't ask me to restrict that at all.

  • I drank black tea here and there during pregnancy, and if you want to go with an "herbal" type tea that may be good for when you have a cold, ginger tea is fine too. I'd go with sugar or pasteurized honey to be safe with sweetener. Feel better!

you can go kind of crazy with all the eating/drinking guidelines while pregnant.  i drank tea or coffee every day.  less than usual, but 9 months of me off caffeine & alcohol (which, btw, I had a few glasses of wine in my 3rd tri while we were in france) would not be pretty. I did, however, refrain from unpastuerized cheese & lunch meat.  Go figure.
