TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

IVF Question

We're going to be doing IVF this next cycle if our 3rd IUI fails.  Our diagnosis is MFI (very low morphology (1-2%) - all else is fine).  My RE offers a single cycle plan and a 2 cycle plan, and we're trying to decide which makes more sense.  We're very likely going to have to do ICSI.  The single cycle plan is just that - one cycle - no FETs included (they can be purchased seperately).  The 2 cycle plan includes 2 IVFs and up to 3 FETs per IVF, as long as we have frozen embryos.  The 2 cycle plan is about $2000 less than paying for 2 single cycles.  Basically, we'll come out ahead if we only use 1 IVF and then a few FETs.  If we need more than one IVF, it is more cost effective to buy the 2 cycle plan.

How did you decide what to do?  It seems like such a huge gamble either way.  I feel like I'll be kicking myself if we buy the 1 cycle plan and we need 2 cycles, or if I buy the 2 cycle and we only need 1.

Sorry if this is rambling.  I was just hoping to bounce some ideas off of you all.

TIA!

Re: IVF Question

  • Would you be able to do a FET or the 2nd chance later for a 2nd child for the same price?

No - the 2 cycle plan ends when pregnancy is achieved.  In the event of a miscarriage after the 1st IVF, then we would have the 2nd IVF.  With the single cycle plan - one shot is it.

  • We decided that since I'd m/c'ed so many times already we would just go ahead and buy a multi-cycle plan. A single IVF cycle costs about 10k  at our RE's office and they had a program that was $15,500 for 2 fresh IVF and 2 FET cycles (4 total).  It was a gamble but we knew that if we got pg the first cycle and had a baby we wouldn't care about paying the extra $5k because we would have a baby.  Unfortunately our intuition was right on and we m/c with our first IVF and again with our first FET.  So I am very thankful we bought the multi-cycle plan and it ended up saving us a lot of money.  I am going back for round 3 in a couple of weeks.  I start shots Wednesday.  It's nice to know its already paid for and we just have to come up with anesthesia fees and meds.

Good luck with whatever you decide!!!!

  • If it were me I would purchase the multi cycle plan. My first IVF didn't take, and I had none left to freeze from that cycle. My second took, but unfortunately we lost our twins from that cycle. They changed up my meds with the second cycle, which is why I think we had some over for an fet.

That really stinks that you can't use it later for a 2nd child!!

What a difficult decision. Personally I would probably go for the 2 cycle one... spend the extra money but to know that you have a "back up" just in case would ease my mind.

  • I would probably do the two cycle plan, kind of insurance policy. I did one IVF cycle but had an early miscarriage and am getting ready for a second, just for a reference point.
  • I think the shared cycle is the best bet if you can afford it.  Yes, IVF works the first time for lots of people, but for lots of others it doesn't.  It didn't work for me the first time.  I did not do a shared cycle, but only because I had a small amount of insurance money and I couldn't use it towards a shared cycle.  Much of it was used, but I have a small amount left and so I am using it (and paying some OOP) for this 2nd IVF.  That will be it for us though, we just can't afford another cycle right now.

  • Thank you for all of your responses - you brought up some really good points.  I think we'll probably end up doing the 2 cycle plan.
