Glider necessary?

For the moms out there, if you had a glider were you glad you did?  Did you think it was a waste?  I'm trying to figure out right now if one will fit comfortably in the baby's room but am thinking it might feel a little cramped.  Thoughts and opinions appreciated?

Re: Glider necessary?

  • definitely necessary!  We still rock Holden before bed in the glider!   Actually if I had realized how much we were actually going to use it, I would have spent much more money on one and gotten one that was MUCH more comfortable!

  • We got a rocker, not a glider, but I like it. Although she doesn't want to be rocked to sleep anymore, we still read to her in it and will feed her in it too.  I say do it!

  • We have one but I wish we had purchased a better chair. W's nursery is teeny tiny so we got a glider vs an upholstered type chair thinking it would save some space. It's not comfy to sit in for long periods. I never can fall asleep in it if we are having a rough night. I'm glad we have some sort of chair in there, but my suggestion is to get something better than a glider. Also, now that he's bigger, he can't comfortably nurse or relax to read a book because the chair is too narrow.

This!  Some nights, you'll just want to close your eyes and go to sleep in there too because the baby will only want to sleep being held.  Our chair is not comfy enough to sleep in and we wind up miserable while Lucy is sawing logs.

  • If it makes a difference for the sleeping aspect, we'll have a queen size bed also in the room....

ETA: If you have recommendations on where you got your chairs of have seen them I'd be happy to get those recommendations as well!

  • I have one in both of my children's rooms. I've slept many, many a night in those gliders with fussy newborns, sick infants.

It's still a nightly part of our routine.

One of my daughter's first words was "rock".

  • I guess I am the odd man out.  We never used ours.  We would feed sitting up in bed with a boppy.

That's great...but if your baby is asleep on your chest, the bed isn't going to do you any good :)

We have both a simplier wooden Dutalier glider (picked up at a garage sale).  That one is in my daughters room because it's rare, now, that I'm rocking her much past our good night rock.

We splurged on a leather padded Dutalier for my daughter's original nursury. It's now in my son's room.  It reclines, has a leather glidding ottoman.  That's the one I have slept in so often.  It was waaaay more than I ever, ever thought I'd spend on a glider and worth every dang penny.  We picked something that we could move into our living or family room at such time as we no longer had it in either of the kid's rooms.

I am not much for splurging on children's furniture - but this is the exception.

  • Oh yes. We LOVE our glider. My son's room is pretty small, but it has been wonderful. He doesn't want to be rocked in it at this point, but it is where he wants to sit to be read to, and he will also sit in it himself with books. We have a Shermag glider from BRU and it is super comfy. When he was tiny, I'd totally pass out in it when walking to the door and back to my own room was too much work. Hee.

  • Connor is two and sometimes I still have to go in and glide him in it. We got a cheaper rocker for Syds room and it definitely has come in handy. Oh and we have tiny rooms but I think it's worth the space it eats up.

  • We had a rocker and it really did no good for my DD, so I never used it on the other kids either. We did sleep laying down with babies on our chests. Some nights we would take shifts pacing (since on the 4 S's had to be used all a once for my oldest to clam down & sleep.) If room/money was no object and I had to start again I would get a huge lazyboy (or similar) rocker recliner in leather. It should be as comfortable as a bed.

We rarely used our as well, I was either down stairs with him (his bassinet was down there) or he was in bed with me until 5 months.  I never had to rock him to sleep.  If we have another I won't buy one unless I need it.

  • Yes!  We have this one: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3902404

I can't tell you how many hours I have spent in it rocking A.  I believe this is something you do not want to go cheap on.  You'll pay for what you get so if you are going to buy one spend the money and get something comfortable.

  • It was absolutely necessary for me!  I bought mine off of Craigslist.  Loved love loved it.  The arm rests were the perfect height for the breastfeeding pillow, it glided and swiveled, it's still a necessity for our bedtime routine and comforting a sick toddler.  :)

  • I don't think a glider is necessary but SOMETHING is necessary for sitting and nursing and sleeping and rocking and reading books.   We actually have a small couch in the nursery and I love it.  Having some place that you can lay down has been a godsend.  But anything you can comfortably (or semi comfortably) hold a baby and sleep is a requirement.

OK I see you have a bed in there.  that might be OK.  Although I like having something that's chair height.  I'm not sure I'd be able to nurse every night in/on a bed and then get out of the bed holding a sleeping baby to put him in his crib.   And you'll want to make sure you have some good way to be able to sleep sitting up for sick nights with snotty noses.

Do you need to leave the queen sized bed in there?  I might take that out and put in a really nice upholstered chair/recliner  or even something more like a futon so you can sit in it but pull it out if you're finding you want to really sleep in there.

  • Gavin is almost two and we still use the glider for story time every single night.

We have a plain old wooden rocking chair and it sucks ballz. I wish I had a glider because we sit and rock every night before bed. I am getting the best damn glider I can find with the next baby! Even if that baby doesn't need the rocking, Max still will.

  • We have the Shermag one also from BRU with the footstool & love it! It was one of my MUST have pregnancy wishes and I don't regret getting it at all. We got it in a neutral color also so that we can use it in any future children's rooms.

  • Another oddball out here! We never used one, mainly because I never found one that was totally comfortable, not overly massive, and/or an eyesore. It was one of those 'must-have' baby items that we managed just fine without. On the flip side, I had a really good sleeper from the start, and we also co-slept for the first 6 or so months.

same here! We are actually going to buy another one for baby #2 because I'm sure we'll be reading Ella her bedtime stories in her rocker until she is in a big enough bed that we'll all fit! :)

  • What I wished for was a lazy boy type chair that would rock .  My SIL has one that she got with her 2nd DD and loves it.  I use it every time we visit. We couldn't afford it so we got a gilder from a garage sale.  LOVE IT!  I moved it into our room & that is where we nurse, snuggle, read books, etc.  When DD was sick I spent about 3 days in that gilder.  The only time I wasn't in that gilder was when we were in the bathroom making a steam room or she was in her swing.  (another thing I wouldn't live without! We have the fisher price aquarium swing).

  • We have one and I have never used it. It might just depend on the child, DD is really easy going.

I've used rocking chairs that make me motion sick (not a glider, though).

  • We didn't have the room - so instead used an exercise ball (some babies prefer the bounce vs. rocking)....and now we just use the livingroom couch for storytime. But if you have the room....
  • We had a twin bed in the bedroom with the baby at first and instead it got used to throw crap on because I had a reflux baby and couldn't lay down with him.  I have LIVED in my glider with both kids!  Currently our glider is out in the family room only because I don't want to wake Cruz up at night with a crying baby.  I have the $200 glider from target and its so comfy, I love it!

  • Thanks everyone for the responses!  I'll check out your suggestions and see what we can make work.  Of course the one I like its $1000 so I'll be looking for a cheaper version :)
  • We have a glider/ottoman that we like quite a bit. We got it at BRU and it doesn't take up too much space. However, had I known just how much time would be spent in that chair, like PP, I would have purchased something more comfortable. When I'm sitting with baby on a rough night I dream about it being a big, cushy, rocking recliner!
