Babies: 0 - 3 Months

xp: LO still only naps on me, help?!

The instant I put her down she wakes up but will sleep hours while on me. I was hoping this was a phase but it isn't getting better! It doesn't matter where I try to put her down... if she's sleepy but awake or out cold... she'll cry inconsolably and not sleep and then be totally overtired. Nighttime is fine and we can get her down after a few tries. I did get her into her crib for a nap after swaddling her yesterday but she only slept for 15 minutes and woke up screaming bloody murder.

I am frustrated because there's so much I should be doing but I am trapped beneath a baby on the sofa! I have tried wearing her but it seems to piss her off most of the time.

Any advice would be appreciated Wink

  • How long is she awake before you try putting her down?

Usually about an hour and a half. I am trying to stick to the "optimal awake time" ...

  • Mine 5 week old is doing the same thing!  I can get her to fall asleep in the swing or when I'm holding her, but the minute I put her down she wakes back up...if I'm lucky I get ten minutes of her in the basinette, just enough time to start a project and leave it half finished when DH gets home from work!  This is a new pattern in the past few days and it's driving me nuts!  Not to mention the fact that my upper back muscles have begun to seize up from holding her so much!

Feel your pain, I am going to have killer biceps soon Wink

I wish mine would sleep in the swing... she hates the swing, car and carseat and won't sleep in the vibrating chair. I love her so much but wow, this is frustrating!!

    Awesome :)

If you find she's not sleeping well though, I'd recommend cutting off about 20 minutes of her awake time. My 6 month old goes down after 1.5 hrs now.

The optimal awake time guideline includes about 20 minutes of time it takes for a baby to typically fall asleep. I'd recommend putting your LO down after 1 hr 10 minutes or so (max).

::butting in:: My LO is the same way - won't allow me to put her down. She sleeps well at night but not during the day. I can't seem to make her happy unless I'm nursing or holding her. My question is, how do I put her down after any amount of time if she just screams and cries? I don't want her to CIO and don't know how to find a balance.

I find that my baby doesn't cry at all if I find the right amount of awake time. How long are you waiting before your LO naps?

I suppose I don't know. She sometimes nurses for a whole hour. I'll have to try to pay more attention and try putting her down after the right amount of time.

Definitely give it a try, it might help.

At 1 month old, try putting her down after about 45-60 minutes of awake time. Obviously if she's hungry, don't force her to stop eating, but maybe try to feed when she wakes up right away so she has that 45-60 minutes that she can nurse.

For the record, we FF our kids so I have no experience with BF babies. Also, it did take both kids like 45 minutes to eat their bottles when they were little, so they did nothing but eat and sleep (with maybe 5 minutes of playtime) until they were 3+ months.

  • You described my exact routine, we have slept on the sofa since day 1 , even in the hospital she slept on me. What i have been doing is feeding her around 9 30 then putting her into her crib sleepy sometime it takes 20 minutes sometimes 2 hours for her to fall asleep but its been a week or so and she sleeps 3-4 hours in there alone then when she wakes up we sleep on the couch for their on so its half and half now and soon to be full time.
