Would a doctor even DO this?

We are going on an extended family trip in a couple of days. MIL told me I should call my doctor and get a prescription for antibiotics just in case one of my boys gets sick while we're gone, "then we won't have to spend vacation time in a clinic."

WTF is she smoking? No doctor would do that, correct? Not that I would want them to, either.

This is definitely going to be an interesting family trip!

  • My mom and my sister have both told me something similar.  My sister's kids are 18 and 16.  I'm guessing this was something that doc's used to do "back in the day."  Now not so much.  So I don't think your MIL is crazy to say this since I think it  was the norm not too long ago.  Just let her know that doc's won't do that anymore.

  • No, but depending on history, they could call you in one once you got there if you need it (like your kid has had enough infections for you to know what it was).

I've heard of parents of frequent EI kids getting them beforehand, though, especially if flying.

  • I want to say I've had DD's pedi give me a script to have on hand "just in case" (her idea--not mine!) because we were going on vacation.  Not sure if it was for antibiotics though.

HOWEVER, it was when one of my girls was on month 3 or 4 of persistent EIs and we were on our way to tubes anyway.  So there was a history there.  It wasn't a total "well maybe you'll get strep while you're away so..."

And naturally, because we had the script on hand, we didn't need to use it.  Stick out tongue

Interesting. MIL used to do billing in a pedi's office about 15-20 years ago, so I'll bet that is where this is coming from.

    This was my thought too.

  • My brother's doctor does that for him but I doubt our pedi would (we have the same pedi) because they would feel it was guess work on what antibiotic to give since it would be different for different bacterias.  Man, hope your kids don't get a virus when you are gone or it will be REALLY interesting!

  • My doctor has done it for me.  I have a history of severe UTI's.  A couple of years ago I was going to Europe for 2 weeks and asked if I could have a round of antibiotics just in case.  It wasn't a problem, and of course because I had them I didn't need them.

  • I've never asked ahead of time, but I really thought dd had pink eye and we were oot for the weekend and my dr called in a script for me.

  • some of the docs in the office I work in will do this for UTIs, yeast infections, etc. but we are not a pedi office, we are obgyn

  • Some of the circumstances people are mentioning make sense; my boys don't have any recurring issues like EIs, so it just seemed off to me that MIL suggested it. Seemed like over-preparing, not to mention bad medicine to blindly prescribe a drug before a condition even exists, kwim?
  • Are you going out of the country?

I took a Rx with me when I did study abroad, just in case...  It was recommended that everyone bring a Zpack and my doctor had no issue giving it to me.

  • My pedi gave us an Rx for an overseas trip in case because DS had been having lots of ear issues...I think it depends on the child and the situation.  If your kids are normally healthy, no I would suspect they would not.  If there is a reason for concern based on their past health, maybe they would.  We were going to Italy for over two weeks and on a plane for hours....I was glad to have an Rx in case since he had lots of ear issues.  We did not need it thank God.

  • The only time I have ever had that work was when I was traveling overseas and had asked my doc who agreed to it but only because I have chronic bronchitis and even if I get a cold, it can get bad if I'm not careful.
