I failed the 3hr GTT today. My fasting was 104, 1hr was 140, and then passed the 2hr and 3 hr (she didn't tell me those #'s).
I really didn't think I would have it and I may be in total denial now because:
#1, my baby is very small ~ 19% for her gestational age
#2- I have low amniotic fluid (btwn 7-8 AFI since 24 weeks) and usually it's the opposite, they see bigger babies and too much amniotic fluid with GD.
#3, I didn't have it with DD1 and she was small too, 6lb8oz.
So now that I've been diagnosed, I really need to find the silver lining. I am so depressed that I have yet ANOTHER complication in this pregnancy.
I was already dealing with weekly U/S & NSTs because of the low fluid. I am on procardia for preterm labor too. I just feel totally overwhelmed now.
My doctor was trying to get me to look on the bright side and said I may not gain anymore weight this pregnancy (I've gained 13 lbs), and that I may even lose some. Has that been your experience? Do you have any other positive things that have come out of your diagnosis?
Re: GD mamas: Share what's positive about having GD
I've been told that you may get more u/s... which to me is bonus!
And my DH was happy to hear I will be delivered a little earlier... which will fall right in his inventory timing... and he's psyched to not have to work overnight for 2 weeks if the timing works out right!
Of course I hope this LO (and yours!) ends up perfectly healthy and everything goes as smoothly as possible.. but these are the 2 positives I've figured out so far!
First, I have to say that your DD is adorable! What a cute picture! Sorry about your GD diagnosis, especially with the ptl and low amniotic fluid. I was going to say that one of the good things is getting more information from doctor's visits- NSTs, and U/S, but you already have those tests being performed on you. I hope that you can see the same MFM specialist, so that you don't have so many visits.
Being on the GD diet does keep you from gaining too much weight. Not that you've gained much at all! I gained very little in my first pregnancy, but I had some weight loss during first tri and early second tri due to nausea. I weighed 119 at diagnosis and delivered DD at 122. I started at a lower weight this time and have not gained much at all. It is hard to gain weight eating "free veggies".
I don't mind the diet. You will have extra incentive to eat lots of fresh vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. It really is a great way to eat even if you aren't pregnant. The feeling of not being able to indulge until the end of your pregnancy can be a downer, but it isn't forever. My MFM limits fat intake, but that doesn't seem to be the norm for most GD patients.
I find that eating and testing on a schedule is harder for me now that I have a toddler. We have lots of activities during the week and on the weekend, and it took me a week or so to get used to my schedule. Now, it is just a nuisance. To be honest, everything becomes so routine, that I don't usually think about my GD, it is just a part of my life right now. GL- you don't have that long to go!
I am sorry you are joining us, but it isn't so bad. I was diagnosed at 153lbs 2 months ago and haven't gained a single pound. ( I had gained 15 lbs up til then and now i am caught up).
I have had extra ultrasounds.
I do really appreciate the things i can have, like when I discovered my blood sugar is fine with an orange in the afternoon, a klondike bar in the evening and a big glass of milk right before bed. Though it stinks to be so limited, these little treats make my day.
I have a re-newed love of making my own salad dressing and being creative in the kitchen

My silver lining would be that I haven't gained much weight at all due to the diet - I had gained 11 pounds at the time of diagnosis (28 weeks) and right now I'm only at 16 pounds for the whole pregnancy. I'm actually concerned that I haven't gained much weight, but apparently that is not a concern to my doctor. The baby is smaller too, so I'm hoping that will be a bit easier on the labor?! At any rate, it shouldn't take me long to fit into my previous clothes.
I've actually lost weight since being diagnosed with GD, and everyone keeps telling me that I look great. I have a lot more energy this time around too, which is always a bonus with a toddler running around.
my angel babies: 6/10 (chem. pg), 9/10 @ 10 weeks
Thanks to the diet I have a ton more energy. LO moves around more as well which is interesting/fun. Before she did not respond to the traditional kick tests (drink sugary drink, etc.) and now she does so it's a bit of a relief when I worry.
I think it will also be easier to lose the baby weight after birth because we're used to eating a healthy diet. I'm not sure how I am compared to other GD ladies but all I hear from coworkers is how tiny I look right now. I even went to a meeting today with ladies who were all due 2-3 months after me and was the smallest in the room!
I also think it's interesting to look at how I feel and how that is reflected in the sugars. Tired, cranky, anxious, etc.

Thank you all very much! This made me feel much better!
I'm excited to hopefully not be as tired and cranky. I've been such a slug and never had any energy to do much...
I'm also looking forward to not gaining as much weight as I could have otherwise
. I had A LOT to spare when I got pregnant!
The only positive thing I've experienced with GD is no weight gain. I attended an event the day after I found out I had GD and when I look back at pictures I can see a huge difference! I looked so puffy and huge but after being on the diet for a few weeks I stopped gaining weight, and even lost a few pounds, and stopped retaining water. Now I'm all belly and everyone is constantly telling me how great I look
So when things get hard with the diet and controlling my sugar levels I use that as a positive force to keep me from dwelling on it and getting depressed. It also really helps that my hubby has been extremely supportive since I found out I have GD. He even gives me my needles because I'm afraid to do them myself! In a way our relationship has actually improved because I feel I can depend on him more to help me through the pregnancy, so I guess there are two positives

I'm looking forward to more ultrasounds!
I was dx'd on Thursday morning last week so I started the diet that evening. As of this morning, 5 days later, I have lost 3lbs since my Wednesday evening dr appt. I have plenty to spare though. Pre-preg weight was 172 and my weight this morning was 205 and I'm only 5' tall. I have gained 33lbs to date (I'm 31 weeks along). Just hoping for more weight loss (unintentional of course, just by doing the diet correctly and walking) but since I have weight to spare, even if I lose 10 lbs in the next 8-9 weeks before I deliver I think that's a huge bonus! Plus I'll be used to the diet and will be able to stick with it after the baby is born.
