C is cutting his 2-year molars and miserable. Last night was a cry-fest starting an hour after he went to bed. Tylenol did nothing (we can't use Motrin due to his bleeding disorder) and nothing would calm him other than, temporarily, watermelon, and Elmo videos on my phone. Out of desperation, I called DH and asked him to leave band practice early so he could stop at the drug store and pick up Orajel before they close.
It didn't seem to help too much and I think I remember hearing negatives about it, which is why we've never used it. But now I can't remember what they were. It was the only thing I could think of that might help. We haven't used Hyland's since he was younger...maybe we should try that again.
Re: Is Orajel bad?
There were recently FDA warnings against it - I don't recall the specifics but I'm sure it's easily found if googled.
ETA: Hyland's Teething Tablets were also recalled last year b/c the amount of belladonna in them wasn't appropriately regulated (although my SIL said she'd heard they were back on the market in a more controlled formulation). Our pedi has advised that nothing really helps with teething except tylenol/motrin so that's what we've used since the Hyland's recall.
I'd heard that about Hyland's but didn't hear anything about Orajel...other than googling and reading something about it being a possible choking hazard b/c it can go down the throat and numb it. But I felt like that was more of a concern with younger kids.
He doesn't seem to want to chew on things (which of course has me questioning if it's his teeth, but I do know for sure he is cutting 1 tooth, as I have seen/felt it)...in the past, we've tried a frozen washcloth but he didn't really get into it. I'd like to get my hands on one of those teething toys specially-designed for molars.

Here's what I found on the Orajel warnings. Seems to be mostly a risk for those under 2 which doesn't apply to Cal, but in case you wanted the full info:

You beat me to it (and your primary source trumps my secondary)!
Yikes - thanks. Just discovered they have a benzocaine-free option:
