Any decorating ladies? paint colors advice (lots of non-clicky links inside)

We're getting a kichen makeover (Wooohooo!) New cabinets, granite countertops, extending the wooden floors to cover the kitchen, and knocking down a wall to sort of rearrange everything. Our house colors are pretty neutral and earthy tones, think greens, beiges, browns. I'm stuck as to what color we should paint the kitchen (currently its an awful tile ceiling to floor.) I'm pretty sure the cabinets will be white and the counter tops beige...sort of like this combo

The piano room next the the kitchen is an orangy beige like this: https://www.sherwinwilliams.com/do_it_yourself/paint_colors/ideas/color/SW6633_inventive_orange/

with this rug and accessories to match the colors in the rug.

The other room next to the kitchen is a greenish/beige. We have olive green couches, and a this rug (again with accents to match)

So....what color would you paint the kitchen? Any thoughts? (on a mac...sorry of the non clicky links)

  • I know...the worst part is that I just tried to copy and paste the paint color link and it doesn't work.

    I suck. What can I say? :)

  • Our house layout is Family Room, Kitchen, Dining Room... all at the back of the house.

We have a pillow/chair/couch that an Interior designer matched for us.  The couch is sage green-ish.  The pillow has beigh base color, yellow, green, and rose... So our FR is a darker rose/red, kitchen sage, and DR yellow (think mustardy).

I agree with darker granite, we have granite, but have you considered the quartz/silestone?  It is engineered and similar in look/price to granite.  I wish we had done that.  I think there are many advantages to it (and is "green")  :)

I'd love pics! Why do they suggest not going light on countertops?

  • We recently redid our kitchen and we also have white cabinets and beigish granite similar to what you showed in the pics. Our kitchen was orange but I didn't want it so bold anymore. The rooms surrounding it are mostly neutral but kind of bolder (our living room is a deep burnt reddish brown, dining room is kinda a creamy yellow, like banana pudding). We ended up going with a pale ivory (Benjamin Moore "Frappe") and LOVE it. Here are some pics of our before/after (although the before already included the new appliances):

  • We did the quartz counters (Caesarstone I think) in our old house and I really liked them.  You dont have to seal them annually and they hold up really great.  Virtually indestructable!  Plus they always looked clean, even if they werent.

Onto the paint - if it is only a small area then I would go for a pop of color.  Your kitchen is going to be very neutral and a little pop of color would be nice.  If it is a large area then I would stick with a neutral just to make the kitchen brighter.  At home depot, they have a Martha Stewart line of paint and each swatch has a little icon that shows you what other colors would coordinate with it so your house is cohesive.  You can get a pamphlet of all of the colors and then see which are closest to the colors you already have and go from there.

    Good luck!
