TTC after 35

Need advice re: u/s & iui

OK- I have been really down today. A nurse did my u/s and said the biggest follicle is measuring 16 so I won't be triggering as planned. I go back Monday for another u/s and more bw. This is all new to me and since it was a nurse, I didn't ask her any questions. She said, "If you end up doing the IUI it will most likely take place on Wed or Thur" She also asked me where my husband usually collects his specimen. When she put the question that way, it made me think that IUI never works on the first try. I had to explain this was our one and only try. She didn't tell me how many I have total. My u/s on Monday is with the doctor so he will give me more information.I am feeling  anxious and emotional because everything was looking so good. I started crying after my bw. I give all of you women tons of credit for going through this journey cycle after cycle. I am starting to see how emotional this process is. This is our only shot at this...

1. Is it possible that it will get bigger while on the same dose of medication?

2. How big do they want it to be?

3. Has this happened to anyone else?

4. Is there a chance they will cancel this cycle based upon a follicle that is too small?

5. They do IUI 36 hours after Trigger shot. Does this sound odd or standard?

  • I'm so sorry it wasn't what you were expecting. I can only answer a couple of your questions based on experience, so hopefully others will chime in. The T-TTC board is also grea for help. 1. Yes, it will continue to mature 5. Standard practice It's definitely an emotional roller coaster. Its ok to cry and get it out. Lots of women get pregnant on their first IUI. Wishing you tons of good luck for your follicle to mature and the IUI to be successful!

Thank you! The pressure is huge because this is our only chance. Trying to relax and expect great news on Monday and excellent results in about 2 1/2 weeks. Please, God!! Thank you so much for answering my questions.

  • I'm sorry about this; I'm even sorrier to say that yes, IUI's often do not work on the first try (but sometimes they do!!!).  At any rate, as an IUI veteran I can answer your questions.

    imageLove2Hope:

    1. Is it possible that it will get bigger while on the same dose of medication?

Absolutely! Follicles grow between 1-2mm per day.

    2. How big do they want it to be?

About 20-22mm (by the time it ovulates, which it will do based on the trigger), but any follicle 14mm or bigger has the chance of containing a mature egg.

    3. Has this happened to anyone else?

Lots of people have to wait while their follicle(s) keep growing!  It depends on what day of your cycle you had the ultrasound, how your body is responding to the meds, etc.

    4. Is there a chance they will cancel this cycle based upon a follicle that is too small?

Absolutely not.  If you have one that is 16 now (and you may have more? I don't know what med they had you on), you are good to go for an IUI.

    5. They do IUI 36 hours after Trigger shot. Does this sound odd or standard?

It is totally standard and be happy that's what they do; my old RE did them at 18 hours after the trigger which made no sense!

Hang in there.  I know it is so, so hard.  Also, on the chance that that lead follicle ovulates before you trigger, I would make sure to BD with your DH this weekend, probably tomorrow.

Thank you! I guess it's in God's hands. I wish I had a little more control. I really do appreciate the input, advice and support.

  • First, cry.  Cry all you want.  It's a horrible journey and the ups, downs and in-betweens are exhausting.  Second, don't get too discouraged.  I got PG on my 1st IUI and while this isn't always the case, it does happen. Now ...I thik I can answer some of your questions:

    imageLove2Hope:

    1. Is it possible that it will get bigger while on the same dose of medication?

Follicles do mature.  However, my 'mature' follicles were a bit on the smaller side so I was given a few warnings that they weren't as big as they generally like to see them - I was at the low end of normal.

    2. How big do they want it to be?

I can't remember.  Sorry.  I started out at 16mm just like you and I think it was somewhere between 17-20 when I finally triggered.

    3. Has this happened to anyone else?

    Yes!  Me.

    4. Is there a chance they will cancel this cycle based upon a follicle that is too small?

They never mentioned canceling on my but like I said before, I was given warnings that it may not work.

    5. They do IUI 36 hours after Trigger shot. Does this sound odd or standard?

I have been saying a prayer for you too and everyone on this board but we are so close in cycles. I don't remember what he said exactly but I think they were around 18? I am SO bad with numbers but he did say they like to see them between 18-20 and I am right on target. I had to laugh that he took a picture and printed it out for me. Trigger was less painful than the Menopur. Praying this works and feeling very hopeful. Poor husband is a bit nervous about his part of this process ;-) I hope we can go through pregnancy together :)
