Food Allergy

dairy alternatives - help!

I thought my lo was lactose intolerant, but it seems to be more than that.  After one sippy cup of lactose-free milk, we have had two days of gassy tummy pains that keeps him from sleeping at night.  Does anyone have the names of good books or websites that I could use to learn more about the alternatives.  I have read stuff here and there, but it always seems so biased in one direction that I am not comfortable making a decision yet.  I want to be able to have an educated conversation with the doctor about it.

  • i don't know about books, but your first step should be calling your pedi and perhaps getting your LO tested for food allergies and/or visiting a GI.

Here is a great link that helped me in the beginning when we had to go milk/soy free.

  • thanks for that site.  We have his one year check up next week.  We have been talking about his issues since his one month appointment.  I quit eating dairy, and he really improved.  I added cheese back in, and he did fine.  Now he eats a ton of cheese with no problems.  I was told to try yogurt at 9 months, but yogurt gave him slimy poop and tummy aches.  So I was instructed to try a lactose free milk around his first birthday, but that seems to cause issues too.  Maybe our pedi will feel differently about allergy testing after one year of age.

  • it doesn't seem like an allergy in that case, probably a GI issue.

That is so true!  I feel like I have to fight so hard to be taken seriously with his issues because it is not a full blown allergy.  I have know something was not right since the first week, but it kept getting dismissed by nurses as his fussy time.  I knew that was wrong, so I just began eliminating foods on my own. My pedi puts a lot of faith in "mommy gut" though, so he believes me and together we thought it might be lactose intolerance (runs in the family).  I think we are wrong, so I will look into gi issues to discuss that with him next week.

a gut feeling is everything. I didn't go with my gut feeling and learned a very important lesson.

Even though your child's issue is not life threatening, it doesn't mean he has to suffer.

  • godairyfree.com is a great site... we used it a ton when LO was first diagnosed. Coconut Milk, Almond Milk, Rice Milk, Hemp Milk are great alternatives... some people can use Goats Milk but the protien is VERY similar to a cows milk protien so you may NOT be able to use it.
