My little boy has been having a lot of bad gas pains the last 48 hours. He is having trouble sleeping because he is so uncomfotable. It breaks my heart. I bought gripe water yesterday and have him some before his bedtime bottle. It seemed to help for about 5 hours until he woke up for his next bottle. But then he was wide awake and gassy again, I could hear his insides rumbling with the gas bubbles. He didn't get back to sleep for 3.5 hours even though I could tell he was really, really tired.
How often do you give your LO gripe water?
I bought the type with alcoohol in it and now wonder if that was a mistake after looking on "Dr. Google". Do you use the type with or without alcohol?
Any other suggestions on helping with his gas pains? I have tried massage, warm bath, bicycling his legs, tummy time and rocking him. He usually is gassy and screams when pooping, but this is worse then normal.
Re: Gripe Water questions (gassy baby)
Hi - I'm just randomly passing thru the board (followed the Ferber Q from the multiples board)... but I wanted to say that gripe water was my savior for the first 4 months.
Get the type with no alcohol in it and you can use it in every bottle. It gets pricey but it's so worth it. They are a tad cheaper on Amazon (we used Mommy's bliss).
Good luck and hug your baby! They don't stay small for long!

I feel like it has a lot to do with the age. Our LO was super gassy right around that time too. A few weeks made a world of difference. Gripe water was our friend though. We bought the kind w/ the blue box, and you can give it I believe 6 times a day?
Try keeping your baby upright about 20 mins after a feeding too - we do this & it helps her to burp & get the gas out. GL.
So it is okay to use it 6 times a day? I know the package says that but I don't want to over medicate. And you give it in the bottle? What happens if LO doesn't drink the whole bottle? I gave it in a syringe thing last night right into his mouth. But in a bottle would be easier.
Is there a reason to go with the non alcohol type?
We don't always need it, but you can use it up to 6 times a day.
I don't put it in the bottle because I worry about her not taking the full bottle. Also this week our doctor said we can use miralax. 1/2 teaspoon in a bottle once day. For a little girl that was pooping every 3-4 days and was VERy fussy/gassy, she has now pooped 2 days in a row! She seems more comfortable so we will use it once a day and slowly taper off hoping her body takes over.
The Gripe Water I used for my LO is Little Tummys by Little Remedies (no alcohol) and it worked wonders for the gas. I gave it every 4 hours for awhile and then I started to space the doses out at longer stretches to where I don't even need it now. I gave it to my LO in a medicine bottle that you can get in the baby isle at Walmart. He took it every time with no problems. I understand that it is a little pricey, but to me, my baby's comfort is more important. This, by far, is the best stuff to use for a gassy LO!!!
We had major gas pain issues with my daughter around the same time as you. We started with Mylicon but quickly switched to gripe water. We gave it every other bottle, about every six hours, maximum dosage. It didn't totally clear up the gas, but it helped a lot, to the point that it at least stopped the doubling over and crying from pain. I could also hear and feel the gas bubbling around inside, but that seemed to lessen with the GW.
Now it seems my LO is totally over it. It just sort of slowly got better every day, and now I haven't given her gripe water in probably 2-3 weeks with no issues at all.
I used the Little Tummies brand. Not sure if it has alcohol, but it worked well for us. Just after a couple weeks, skip giving it to him one day and see if he's OK without it. If not, go back on, rinse and repeat.
Yes, right in the bottle. If you are concerned about him not getting it all, you could make two ounces with GW, have him drink that, and then make more without. We did it every other bottle (assuming about 3 hours between feedings).
Second, GW isn't medication -- it's herbal. You shouldn't worry about "overmedicating." Just don't exceed the allowed dosage, but it's definitely preferable to Mylicon, which is a chemical.
