Food Allergy

Need help finding safe sunflower seeds/butter

Right now (after Celiac diagnosis 15 months ago my immune system went "crazy" and I react to almost every food) I have only 7 safe foods.  I've lost 50 pounds, and at my last blood panel my essential fatty acids are extremely low, and I'm losing an insane amount of hair.  The only fats I can handle are chicken, beef, and olives/olive oil, which do not supply EFAs.  My dietitian recommended safflower oil, and I had a nasty reaction to that.  Next she suggested sunflower oil.  I have not found a sunflower oil that is not cross-contaminated by either nuts or gluten (I've called several companies).  So now I'm looking for actual sunflower seeds.

I've found 3 brands of sunflower seed butter, and get this:  two of those brands are manufactured on shared equipment with nuts - what's the freaking point of bothering to make sunflower seed butter if you're not in a dedicated facility?!  And name-brand Sunbutter is mfr'd on shared equipment w/soybeans (tree nuts and soy are HUGE allergens for me).   All my google searches for safe sunflower seeds or butter are coming up empty... does anyone have any recommendations?

  • I "liked" the foodfacts.com site on Facebook and they posted the Sunbutter product yesterday.  They mentioned that if you have a Wegmans or Whole Foods, you can make this yourself in the store.  I wonder if that equipment in the store has cross-contamination though?

  • Yeah, I'd never dream of buying anything from a bulk bin, or using store equipment to grind anything.  :(

Could you grind the seeds yourself at home?  I've never done it but I would think a food processor would do the trick.

I would love to, but I cannot even find basic sunflower seeds that haven't been processed on shared equipment (with nuts, soy, gluten, etc.).  That's what I need help finding.  :)

  • I live in a hippie town, and we have a huge local food co-op.  The paid employees (and some of the owner/workers too) are really knowledgeable about food allergies.  My husband shops there when buying for the school he works out, and they are helpful at finding safe foods for him to buy.  If you called the one closest to you, they might be able to find a distributor for you.  Ours will order items for you and allows pick ups/distributions in their parking lot.  If you have already done this, sorry for the old advice!

I never thought of calling a co-op!  Thank you!
